We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonya Cameron and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonya, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think when you are young, you really don’t give to much thought to a work life balance. You are kind of carefree about the entire concept. When I was younger I don’t think we even used that terminology. You went to work, went out with friends, spent time with family and just made it work. As I have matured, I realized that with work or owning a business (sometimes both at one time) and having a family there has to be a balance. For me the scale tips more on the side of family. After having children, my family became my priority and I am not hesitant or shy about saying career and even owning a business take a backseat to family.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am proud of the fact that I didn’t let my age stop me from pursuing my dream of entrepreneurship. This journey has been a learning curve so great at times that you start doubting if it’s possible. It was not easy stepping out on faith again, but with the support of the people that mean the most to me, I am still thriving. I have learned along the way not compare myself to anyone else. I heard someone describe it to a dance. Your competition may be doing a rhythmic salsa dance with a constant flow of clients, while your business may be waltzing at a slower pace. Stay the course and keep learning your trade. Be professional and above all, maintain integrity, because integrity is synonymous with trust. I am looking forward to celebrating many years of success and growing J Cameron House of Linen beyond anything I could ever imagine, and believe me, my imagination is pretty big!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, shopping would definitely be on the list. I would take them to the many Nordstrom Racks in the DFW. Ellen’s(West End) for Brunch one day The following day we would go to Dallas Farmers Market We must go to Bishop Arts District and Trinity Groves to the Cake Bar. It would be nice if the Meyerson or TBAAL was having a nice jazz concert we could take in We would end it with a Saturday cookout on my patio with my husband grilling! and Sunday morning worship at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I get my love of setting the table with the perfect linen from my mother, Cordelia . She was that mother when it came to entertaining. My husband, Isom and children( Isom Jr. and Ryan Gabrielle) have all supported me beyond measure. They are the emotional and mental support behind what keeps me moving forward. They are the muscle behind getting the job done at events and I am super grateful for them everyday.
