We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonny Rios and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonny, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I not only am a vocal coach but a voice teacher as well. I will take students who are not able to sing and teach them to sing, and sing well.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a concert artist of sacred and classical music, I have had the privilege to sing across the USA, Canada, Mexico, and at least twenty-five countries in Central – and South America, and Europe. For me, as a singer, it was easy. If there was a thing that was somewhat difficult, it would have to be the jealousy one encounters from other singers. My attitude was if someone was a better singer than me, I wanted to be around that person to learn from him/her. And, if I was a better singer than someone else, I would never look down on them, but always tried to encourage them and helped them become better singers. I teach my students to be that way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being in the DFW area, my choice would be to take them to Bellini’s Italian Restaurant located on Riverfront Blvd in Dallas. The food is marvelous, and the entertainment is superb, sung by my former student, Tracy Jordan, who studied with me for years and was a headliner in Las Vegas. (That’s a great story to tell.) I would take him to hear Lain Crew, an Elvis impersonator, who has won many awards. I would also take my friend to see a performance of The Dallas Summer Musicals and the Dallas Opera. We would watch the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium–and hope they win. And to conclude, I would take them to see and hear the Mariachi Mexicanisimo in Fort Worth’s Gran Plaza. At least six of the mariachi singers study with me. And if Byron Miño, superb Ecuadorian tenor and my student, is in town, we would hang out with him and we would sing together. He is Vanilla Ice’s dad.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I credit my success to two people: Harley Bulls, my voice teacher at South Plains Junior College in Levelland, TX, and Edward Baird, my voice teacher at The University of North Texas in Denton,TX.. Both men are now deceased. Each taught me the correct way of singing, and I have applied what I learnt from them to my teaching.
