We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonny Fernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonny, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
After 12 years of active duty military service I learned the importance of balancing work and home life. In the first couple years there was no balance and the military’s needs always took priority while my family humbly took the back seat. Adversity often came in the form of deployments, long distance moves and unpredictable working hours. After a few years of service and marriage we learned to balance what little time was given between training and deployments. It wasn’t until I exited the military that I truly understood the impact of my families sacrifice after talking with my wife and two oldest children. While you can’t go back and undo time you can make the best of the time you do have, while glorifying God and honoring those we’ve lost. Becoming a small business owner has blessed me with the ability to make my own schedule. This allows me to prioritize my family’s needs while growing our business. I have also gained the ability to include my wife and children in every aspect of the business. Our decision to homeschool our children contributes tremendously to our flexible schedule. Overall my time in the military and now being a small business owner has given me the chance to create a great work life balance and have my dream job.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have created a family owned and operated dog training business with the skills I acquired during my time in the military. As a dog handler/trainer I put my life in the hands of the dogs we served along side with. Thanks to the elite special operations unit I was apart of I attended countless training courses that are among the best in the world. Having had my hands on hundreds of dogs all over the world has allowed me to understand that you can’t blanket train dogs and each dog is unique as well as it’s owners life style. My business is set apart from other dog training businesses because my family and I open our home to our client’s dog in order to provide them with life changing training that opens up new possibilities for their daily grind. Additionally, we don’t just train the dog, we provide a foundation for the dog but take the time to train the owner in the techniques used.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Kailey (aka KFern) is the bedrock of our success. She is the real brains of the operation while I just train the dogs. My three young children are my motivation and assist me with training and care taking of all the wonderful dogs we train.
