We had the good fortune of connecting with Sky Singleton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sky, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
That’s a solid question, I think I started drawing when I was about 5/6 years old. I remember vaguely people being impressed that it wasn’t stick figures. My mom use to always tell me I could draw even when I wasn’t at my full potential. In kindergarten every Monday a volunteer would come and read us the comic section of the News Paper. Literally at that moment I said I wanted to be an artist. I told my mom I wanted to draw comics for the paper. So she would save me all the “funny pages” every Sunday. I would draw them. Over and over again! As I got older I never lost that dream to be an artist I just kept pushing it back and saying things like “if I had the time.” “You can’t make money off Art.” But I don’t know the first time I painted a pair of shoes and watch the transformation of this blank canvas become art. I was instantly hook I wanted to do it again and again. I love how art makes people smile, the visuals I create strikes emotions and that’s why I do it. I like bringing joy into the world.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So my art is shoe customization along with others, but shoes definitely are the go to, and meat of the sandwich. When I first started I was basically mimicking what I saw. I would find inspiration on google and switch up a few features. Now after doing this for 3yrs I can now look at a shoe and create with out any references. I like to put whatever is in my head on that shoe. I have learned that art is like anything else you want to be good at. Once you do something everyday you are able to physically see the changes. I didn’t use to be too confident in my work but I now have dedicated so much time into my craft that I see the progression. I believe being an Artist is difficult because success falls on to how your work is Perceived. So if it’s Appeasing to the buyers eye you can’t argue or try and per sway them into purchasing. If buyers don’t find your art attractive then your Art doesn’t sell.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I’m originally from California, so let’s assume a cali friend is coming to visit. First stop WHATABURGER! It’s a Texas tradition and they’re strawberry Fanta is heaven sent. Let’s see, definitely hit the Galleria, the the illusion museum. Go to deep ellum and take some pics then continue for the night life.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think it’s Inevitable to mention your parents in a shout out right? Well all bulls*** aside my mom is my biggest fan. She will still Embarrass me at 31 years old. She will whip out her phone and show anyone willing to look at what “her baby does.” Even as a kid I could bring a lopsided giraffe and she was going to point out the details in the spots! She’s awesome I love her for that. For always pushing me to be an artist even when I didn’t want to. I definitely have to shout out my girlfriend/best friend/manager/accountant. Honestly though, she has bought me countless art supplies. But the biggest to date was my first set of Angelus paint. That’s honestly how SkyKickz started. So even though she’s a Taurus and my biggest headache, without her SkyKickz wouldn’t be possible. My Sister is definitely quick to be my
Guinea pig if I want to try something she’s down. She may not even know if I know what I’m doing but I guarantee she will let me try. She came to my house wearing a custom Jacket I painted her. She didn’t have to say anything, I know she’s proud and that alone keeps me going. Last but not least my spoiled Brat son, my only child he makes me laugh. Like Genuine laughs. We spend a lot of time together and he just turned 13 so he’s full of personality, and whenever I am super focused and frustrated I can count on him to make me laugh. His love and respect he has for me is unmatched.
