Meet Shymika Stephenson-Davison | Lead Consultant & Owner of PreCollege Solutions

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shymika Stephenson-Davison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shymika, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The vision of PreCollege Solutions started while I was on a business trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico in November 2014. While awaiting my shuttle from the airport to the conference hotel, I called my best friend. We discussed the conference, which focused on the lack of college readiness for high school students. I remember going on and on, she abrupted stopped me and said, “If I had a college-bound teen, I would pay for those services.” In that moment of silence, I decided to start PreCollege Solutions. The conference ended. On the returning flight to Dallas, I created my vision, mission statement, and services. I felt unmeasurable excitement for the future impact of PreCollege Solutions. The future potential of this generation’s impact is what motivates me. With eleven years of college readiness experience as a Precollege Advisor, I have had no greater joy than assisting high school students in reaching their post-secondary education goal, either college, military, trade, or workforce. Yet my heart hurts for the inaccurate information about college readiness, lack of support system, the thousands of high school students that fall through the crack, and prioritizing to minimize student debt.

What should our readers know about your business?
PreCollege Solutions is a college readiness consulting company, serving as a guide and support system for families, youth-focused organizations, and tutoring companies during the College Admission Process. We provide services in college admission application advising, scholarship application assistance, career exploration, adulting workshops, college-ready workshops for parents, college admission application training for youth-focused organizations, and consultation for tutoring companies. Our mission to assist in producing college graduates with a minimum amount of student debt, which sets us apart from others. We empower families and teens to make the best economical decision in regards to their future. Within the past year, we have been able to obtain our Women-Owned Business Certification, which has allowed us to bid for government contracts. This is very exciting for us as we plan to expand our services and personnel. As I think about how we got here, it was not an easy task. I lost a job, which I loved. Yet, it pushed me to pursue this dream and has grown me as a business owner. I’m learning daily to bet on myself and it is okay to fail. Just regroup, restrategize, and try again.

Although we are small, our impact is mighty. I want our clients/customers to feel that we made a difference in their lives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a vegetarian, I always love to take all visitors to one of my favorite restaurants, ItSo Vegan, Grand Prairie, Texas. Of course, shopping at Grapevine Mills Mall and a comedy club, mostly the Improv in Arlington or Addison.

If it is Sunday, we have to attend my church, Concord Church in Oak Cliff.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It takes a village. There are so many people who I would like to shoutout. My husband and family for the continuous support. Any client/customer who has ever trusted me to provide services and knowledge to their teen(s). All of the support organization that has helped PreCollege Solutions level up; Small Business Administration- Tarrant County, Cynthnia Harness, Buy from A Black Women, Women Business Council-Southwest, and many more.
