We had the good fortune of connecting with Shontrice Maloney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shontrice, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As an educator, I have always strived to do my best to help students reach their full academic potential. With the onset of the pandemic and school closures across the nation, I knew a decline in academic achievement would surely follow. When national reports were released in January of 2021, student underachievement was substantially lower than I had anticipated. As I stared at the dismal numbers, I knew that I wanted to do more to help fill the gaps teachers simply could not alone.
Academic Rescue provides individualized reading interventions to elementary students. Our interventions help students move through the continuum of skills necessary to meet or exceed grade-level expectations. Our primary goal is to fill the gaps created by a disruption of the educational system due to a global pandemic.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a lifelong educator, I knew nothing about the business world. Obtaining clients was my biggest issue. Without the help of my tutor coach, I would still be twiddling my thumbs waiting for my first client. Now that I have onboarded several students, my renewed confidence allows me to freely share my services with others.
I pride myself on creating effective lessons, with appropriate goals, to ensure all of my students succeed. My first scholar earned the Most Improved in Reading award after one cycle (8 sessions) of lessons. The student and parent were extremely happy with the progress that she had made. Other scholars have passed state exams, earned multiple reading awards, and all have shown great improvement in their reading skills.
As a certified teacher with multiple degrees, my knowledge and expertise is unlike most other tutors and/or programs in the metroplex. Families who have worked with me love the individual attention their children receive. They also appreciate the multiple forms of communication they receive each week about their child’s progress.
As the proud owner of Academic Rescue, I will continue to serve my students and their families to the best of my ability. I vow to continue impacting my community, one student at a time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a simple girl, we would begin our day having breakfast at The Original Pancake House then head over to spend a few hours at Perot Museum of Nature and Science. We’d enjoy lunch from one of the many awesome food trucks at Klyde Warren Park and hang out there for a while. The night would be capped off with dinner and a movie at Trinity Groves.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Easter Sunday 2021, I shared my vision of beginning my own tutoring business with my family. Their support gave me the confidence to get the ball rolling.
With passion and great anticipation, May 1, 2021, I made my first Instagram post and waited for the calls to come rolling in. Nothing. I sat dormant all of May, June, July, and August. At the end of August, I connected with a tutor coach and joined her 12-week program, The Tutor’s Blueprint. The month of October I had my first 4-figure month!
Without the continued support of my family and The Tutor’s Blueprint family, Academic Rescue would not be the success it is today.
