We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawn Robles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shawn, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I think an important lesson I’ve learned is that you need to make time for what you are passionate about. In pursuing a career in photography as an artist, I thought that it would be the “dream job”- taking pictures is what I love so it should be perfect, right? What I’ve found however (for myself at least), is that I began to think of my passion more as a chore or simply another task to complete rather than something that brings joy. So I’ve learned that even though I am in the business of taking pictures, I still need to take time for personal projects and goals so that I’m reminded of my love for photography.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from other photographers is the way I perceive the world around me and how the photo is composed in my mind. I’ve been practicing photography for eight years- and in some ways it’s been easy for me. No one has tried to stunt my growth or dampen my passion for photography. I find that the biggest challenge to overcome is myself. Through comparison, self-depreciation , and negative self-expectation, I’ve bullied myself and my work more than anyone or anything else. I want the world to know that it’s all well and good to be “your own worst critic,” but not to the point that you can’t see your talent or be reminded of your passion.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d say the Design District here in Dallas is a great sight to see. Full of art and other inspirations, with plenty of places to eat and be happy.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
No one supports, encourages, and inspires me more than my marvelous wife.
