We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanon Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I feel like I’ve always been a creative person and in the beginning I was pursuing photography commercially specifically for business and advertising but as time wore on I wanted to branch out for myself an shoot the images that spoke to me so I felt going into business for myself was the best way to have creative control.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets me apart I believe is that I care more about the people I shoot and helping to express their personality rather than focusing on “the perfect image” or trying to project perfection. Real life in all forms to me has something poetic about it and a story to tell if you look close an try to understand. Its been harder for me to gain recognition because social media and marketing in general tries to convey a perception of perfection which in most cases not realistic or easy for the average person to maintain. I am at the point now where I only do work that moves or inspires me, its not about the money or recognition. The Movement Imaging is simply a way for me to express myself creatively and tell the story of the people I work with thru their images.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Man Dallas is such a lively city it would take more than a week to really get a feel. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junky so I love jet skis, go carts stuff like that. K1 racing is really fun as far as like a weekend activity. Deep ellum offers alot of great places to eat and has a pulse of art in Dallas throughout, there so many places to eat there I can’t name just one. I’m a bit of an art nerd so I love the Dallas museum of Art as well. Lastly I would say the Arlington Improv I’m just a goofy person in general and love comedy if there is a favorite comedian of mine in town I’m there for sure.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh wow, that’s really a great question as far as photography I would say Justin Crawford owner of The Automation Company. Justin is a very good friend of mine, way back he used to DJ and alot of my earlier work was done working with him at parties and events. I would also like to send a special shoutout to Ken Duane @visionsbyken he is definitely one of the best photographers I know personally and really mentored me a lot early on, great guy.

As far as brands in Dallas I really love what Young Kings clothing is doing w/ college and high school apparel people should check them out  @Yk1k really creative and original. I’m a big fan of the Pan African connection and juice spots in that shopping center, that area deserves more recognition.
