We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Kouser and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea to start Rooted Counseling & Wellness came when I was 9 months postpartum with my first daughter. I was struggling with PPA and adjusting to my new life. I wanted a place where I could grow as a business owner, therapist, and human. Private practice can be a lonely space to operate in. It was important to me to develop a place that honors both autonomy and community. The intention of Rooted is to create a space where providers can grown in a community of support and where clients can grow with access to holistic care.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have worked in the hospital and non profit mental health settings prior to coming to private practice. I made the full transition late 2019 after becoming fully licensed. In the past five years, I’ve had the opportunity to grow as a provider and now own and operate Rooted Counseling & Wellness. The most important lesson I have learned along the way is to stay flexible. Whatever. plan I start with, is often not the plan I end with. Ten years ago I would have sworn that I would not be in private practice. Now, I am operating one. Myself and my business are continuously evolving. Rooted Counseling & Wellness is home to an amazing collective of independent providers. I have learned so much from each of them and am grateful for what they bring to the space. I think part of what sets Rooted apart is that while I operate it, this place has developed and evolved through each member of our space. I am excited that we all offer different specialities and am hopeful that this helps families in Richardson (and across Texas) access supportive care from one central space.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was out for a dream day in Richardson, I’d hit up all my favorite spots! I’d start my day at Staycation coffee with an americano and biscuits and gravy. The yard is my favorite spot to catch up with friends while our kids run around. My daughter loves to run and play at all the great parks in town. My favorite dinner is sushi at Masami. I am not leaving without the baked green mussels!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my family. They assembled furniture, shared my joys, and supported me through the struggles of opening a new business. I am most grateful to my daughter for inspiring me to take the leap!
