We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanista Robertson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanista, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was just that, a THOUGHT! I spoke my desires of wanting to start my own baking business to friends but never put them into action because I was afraid that I would not get any support.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Professionally, I work for a small company in finance as an analyst. I always loved math and numbers so I earned my undergrad degree in Finance from Jackson State University and went on to earn a Masters in Business Administration. Nothing has ever been easy for me but I always had a level of determination to set goals and work hard to achieve them. I overcome challenges by failing and realizing that I am not perfect but if I try again and learn from my mistakes I will succeed. I want the world to know that baking is therapeutic for me and making sure each customer has a Unique experience is what I strive for.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is going to be hard after not socializing during the pandemic I cant remember what I use to do for fun. Ha! I love a good brunch spot so I would start the weekend off at Tupelo Honey at the Star in Frisco. We would have a carafe of mimosas and indulge in their cracklin potatoes, sweet potato pancakes and southern fried chicken, Next, we would go shopping at the Allen outlet then head over to the Galleria mall in Dallas. Everyone loves to experience this mall and check out the all the high end stores. Comedy, yes the Improv! Attending a concert or a comedy show is always a good idea because my friends and I love to laugh and enjoy a good concert.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My grad school classmate LaShunda Patrick is the person who deserves all the credit for my business launch. One afternoon she came over to my home to discuss another business venture and I shared with her that I wanted to start my own baking business. I love to bake and always find myself baking for coworkers or planning a party. I gave every excuse as to why I had not started my business and eventually confessed that I was afraid. She told me that I could not be her friend and be afraid to start my own business. After our meeting she told me that she would be back over on March 1, 2020 to take pictures and build a website and the rest is history. I remember feeling like my world changed in front of my eyes as I laid in bed that night thinking to myself I can’t believe I am a business owner.
