We had the good fortune of connecting with Shakera Moreland, DHSc, MBA, RHIA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shakera, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I am in healthcare and I found that for many of the organizations that I worked with or for, I was more passionate about the mission and purpose than some of those that were in leadership. There were a few leaders that actually “got it”, but most of the time there were just meeting upon meetings about problems and nothing was being produced. I am really solution-based, I don’t like to just point out issues without having a solution. So I decided to create a business where I could use my creativity to solve health care issues my way. Someone has to be bold enough to actually do the work and I don’t mind if that person is me if it benefits others.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information, I discovered that I had no idea what it was that I could do with my degree. I found myself starting in a position and then becoming bored in a short amount of time, thankfully, my experience allowed me to see and interact basically every aspect of the field of health information. I would constantly get inundated with requests from people looking for help in the industry and I was really starting to become a voice for the community. I decided to go into business to help other professionals learn about what their professional options were that would mesh well with their gifts and talents. So far, I have been seeing a lot of success and am becoming a thought leader in the industry.
It certainly wasn’t easy to get to this point of pursuing my interests, I had to slowly wane myself from corporate America so that I could focus on my vision, but it’s rewarding to be able to do what I want to do in my own terms. The only limit I have is the limit I set for myself.
The one thing that sets me apart from others that may be in a similar role is that I am really attentive to my clients and not just on an individual level, but collectively. I’m constantly surveying the field to learn about what the pain points are and I listen to find out how I can come up with a solution. I want to help people get the right skills, in the right place, and doing the right job. By doing that, we will be doing our part to improve patient care outcomes and have a satisfied and well-paid workforce.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a really low-key person and I enjoy nice scenery and having fun. I would probably start by going to my favorite restaurant, O’Jedas to grab some amazing food, and then head over to a nice park in Rockwall to check out the scenery. I am really big on being pampered, so a nice facial at Dallas Stone and Massage, and then top it off with wine, dessert, and jazz at Chocolate Secrets on Oak Lawn.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shoutout to each of my mentors that have encouraged me along the entrepreneurship journey. They have either helped me gain an advantage by introducing me to experts in the field, gave me opportunities to speak on panels to expand my audience, or provided encouragement either through their words or actions. There are so many to name, but they know who they are.
I say this to everyone I speak with, find yourself some mentors that have been where you want to go. This will make your journey so much easier.
