We had the good fortune of connecting with Shakema Tonge and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shakema, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Born and raised in Houston, TX I spent my four years in high school in Seattle,WA. My family had music my dad was a DJ and music was always played in the house. Having the feel for music was always my passion I always wanted to be in the music industry.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My style my taste in music I can connect with any audience by just playing music.Traveling to DJ ,connecting with new people in a year I was really proud of myself. I’m eager to see what the future holds for me. I always believed in me I was passionate about my goals djing. It was never easy I had to practice I had to network I had to take risk and it all workout in my favor. I learned I have to be consistent and always promoting myself as a DJ entrepreneur. Nothing is impossible I see myself djing all around world going tours with artists modeling for designers throwing my own concerts having fun with my craft.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is melting pot with all types of great food Lotus seafood if you love seafood I always eat and enjoy myself. Want to watch a show and eat Hamburger Marys is the place to be to watch a drag show have drinks and eat good.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big thank you to Hamburger Marys for letting me start my career Djing.MECA Houston giving me the opportunity to be a digital instructor for MECA Sunburst Summer Arts Camp. I taught students Kindergarten through ninth grade how to become a DJ how to use the DJ equipment and perform.
