Meet Sékou Fraser | Therapist, LPC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sékou Fraser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sékou, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I decided to start my business for a few reasons, the first reason is the lack of diversity in the mental health field, black male therapists make up less than 3 percent mental health field. I worked for various agencies before becoming licensed and witnessed many agencies focus on quotas and not quality of care for clients which motivated me to become the solution to the problem. Since my value system and ethics would not allow me to remain silenced I oftentimes would get fired from jobs and realize I would never need a job if provided value and quality service to others who sought therapy.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Sage Therapy Group a small counseling practice based in Dallas, Texas serving client’s in Texas and Washington D.C. I started my practice in 2016 after receiving my license to practice. During the beginning phase of starting my practice, I did not have a stable income only a desire to make a long-time dream come to reality so I rented office space in downtown Dallas but I did not have any clients except a vision. It was not easy, most of my colleagues thought I was crazy to rent an office space without any clients but my vision, ambition, and belief in myself to persevere is what helped me build my practice. It was my desire to never work for another agency again with unethical values is what motivated me to keep the lights on. Along my journey of developing my practice, I have experienced ups and downs but the most important thing that I have learned is to provide value to the people that you serve. Therapy is a very rewarding career path. I am honored and must be humbled by each client that has chosen me to be a part of their life’s journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmmm this is a good one I don’t get out much if I were to go to a few spots, I would probably take them to Casa Blanca in Bishop Arts for some drinks, Atlas on Sunday for a nice dj set, and Parliament in uptown when the best bartenders Jessie, Scott & Jeremy use to work there pre-pandemic but the place still has a nice ambiance
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Janet Fraser, Ciceley Nedd-Thomas Esq., Dr. Myrna Dartson, each client that has welcomed me in their life choosing me to be their therapist.
