We had the good fortune of connecting with Sav Mcfadden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sav, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Why did I pursue an artistic or creative career ?
I knew I had to pursue a creative career because I know I would never be content with something traditional. I struggled with the decision in my early twenties. I have always had a strong desire to volunteer and to travel. My childhood experiences left me with an empathy for others and the desire to experience a different way of life.
In 2015 I got an unbelievable opportunity to volunteer at a refugee school on the border of Burma. My time there made me sure of my desire to travel and be of service in some way but the other volunteer all had a higher education. I didn’t go to college, just cosmetology school but I struggled with that pressure. Thinking the only way to be of service was having a degree of some sort but knowing years of college wasn’t for me.
Ultimately realized I could pursue a career in the hair industry and be of service locally. And after some degree of success have the flexibly to travel more than I would with a traditional career. After 5 years and becoming a single mom I’ve reached my goal and it feels bizarre that it’s all come to fruition. I met Amanda Veasy and started cutting hair at One Love with a chair and mirror. After seeing a photo of this a local hair supplier RDA reached out and sponsored en entire salon room at One Love to provide consistent hair cut opportunities for anyone in need. It’s an honor to have this responsibility and freedom.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a hair stylist in East Texas. My apprenticeship was in Chattanooga Tennessee at an organic and modern salon. So I feel like I bring that back to my hometown where there isn’t many stylist with that approach. I love channeling my artistic flow during hair appointments. I wouldn’t say that building my career has been easy but I am passionate and feel like I have a natural talent that has made it a smooth development.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Local places other should explore would be some nature spots out of town. Caddo lake is a spot everyone should check out!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
