We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from what is known as the “Old East Dallas” district. Growing up I had an all white cat named “Silver” and a mixed terrier dog with rottweiler markings but the body of a corgi named “Pumpkin”. Being the baby of the family I turned to my toys and pets to keep me comforted. I’d always try to “rescue” whatever animal I came across. For instance in Pierdas Negras, Coahuila, MX where my father is from there is always a stray nearby. I can vividly remember crying because I had found a chihuahua puppy and I wasn’t able to bring it with us to the U.S. lol. Animals have always been a huge part of my life from reading every book about different species of horses (my spirit animal) and of course books on cats and dogs, including veterinarian technician schooling.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In 2019 I spent the better half of the year researching other bakers around the Texas region and had found there were only 3 dog bakeries in the DFW metroplex alone. However I wanted to bring something different, I wanted to bring originality in designs and flavors for dogs because well, have you ever seen a dogs face/smile when they see the cakes?! Dog happy faces are everything! So I started telling inquiries “tell me what you want and I will try my best”, and that’s what I did. I’ve made gun cakes, joker cakes, star wars, and even friends themed cake. Fur parents are the cutest too when they open their box! So I can say with confidence my dog pastries set me apart from most. So before baking I brought experience from the Texas Workforce from conducting orientations to helping job seekers find employment. We could definitely say they taught me customer service and how to overcome the anxious feeling of public speaking. However I did make a career transition into the transportation industry and have been there for the last 8 years and I love it. Almost as much as I love baking!
There were some bumps along the way too from learning the consistency of icings and cake/treat batter to being laid off in February 2022. There are so many wonderful recipes out there but eventually I ended up mixing up my own recipe that works perfectly! It was definitely a costly trial and error. There were times we also would sign up for community events and come out with most of our inventory but I knew I was in the right place. Everything was a lesson on how to do better the next time.
We need everyone to know that no matter how hard your day is, tomorrow is always a new one to do better. Everything is only temporary and the most annnnyone could tell you is no!
So with all that is said and done we want you to know that when you purchase from us we truly appreciate it. Return customers are always the best too and we make sure to let them know they are appreciated as well. Please shop local, small, and with your heart. The Texan way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take, her out to Greenville Ave’s Pizza Co for some awesome and local pizza! Then we’d head to the Texas Theatre so she could see where Lee Harvey Oswald was caught and to get that feel of what theatres used to look like. Another great stop would be Nubia’s Drive Thru for her signature birria tacos and leave with a tasty magonada drink for the ride over to White Rock Lake to have some fun in the sun and people watch as we finish the magonada. Then head over to downtown Dallas for a cruise to see all the building lights and see what The Omni Hotel has on their light display for the evening. We could then use a couple more days of shopping in deep ellum, searching for small buisness pop up shops. It’s always a must to also see the JFK museum in downtown Dallas and the new Texas Rangers baseball stadium as well. There’s so much beautiful Texas to see that we would just travel between FTW and Dallas to get the full North Texan experience!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Where do we start, we have so many awesome people in our life who have helped us and supported us through the journey! My parents for giving me life and raising me to be a loving and caring person. My kids and fiancee for being right there becoming employees without having to ask lol!! My daughter knows my whole spill when we are at pop ups and when she see’s I’m busy she jumps right in and tells people when I made them and that they have 0 sugars. My son is my muscle, when my arthritis in my hands (because i knead my dough by hand) is kicking in, he’s there kneading it for me and also helping the set up’s and take down. My fiancee for never telling me it was a ridiculous idea to start baking for dogs, for getting off work and ready to help me load the truck up and sit out in the heat to sell. My niece for always encouraging me, coming over for late night decorating sometimes up until 3 am before an event to finish icing/frosting and currently helping me with our soon to be announced logo. My dogs, they’re the whole reason I started baking in 2019. Two are rescues and one’s a purchased emotional support for one of the rescues (yeah, lol I’m THAT dog mom).
