We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Hangtagool and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I like things that challenge me and get me to think outside of the box. I feel like working with food, there is constantly something changing and you have to get creative. I also am a very hands on person, and I like being able to touch and feel the work that I am doing. Sitting behind a computer all day just doing the same thing day in and day out, would not feel satisfying to me. I love seeing how ingredients grow from simple single items, to a full blown 5 course meal. It’s so thrilling. Because you have this idea in your head and you put the pieces of the puzzle together, and seeing it all come to life is so rewarding. I just love being able to freely express myself through food as my medium. It is something that almost all of us can relate on, which in turn helps to build bonds and relationships with one another.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When i describe my food I try to paint a picture. I myself, am a visual person and can picture things so vividly in my head. While I am writing, i want to describe my meal in a way that those reading it will feel as though they were there with me experiencing and tasting the food right along with me. I think food is the best story teller, each bite tells you something new. It was not easy at all getting to were I am today. It took a lot of self discovery, but also a lot of push and drive. I never thought of myself as good enough for this field. There are so many others that are more successful and talented. But, I had to constantly remind myself, that everyone starts somewhere. No one has the answers right away. And we all have different definitions of what success is. The beauty of life though, is that we are constantly learning and growing each step of the way.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
The Dallas-Fort Worth are is such an amazing and diverse area. There is so much to do around here, and something for everyone. My favorite thing ever to do is just go explore honestly. I love driving around and discovering new places to eat, see, experience, the works. Personally, the Dallas Farmer’s Market {or any farmer’s market} is my ultimate happy place. You meet so many amazing people, and discover a TON of new food to try without having to commit to a full meal! I’m also a huge museum person, and DFW is FULL of them!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As cliche as it is, my family and friends are mainly to thank for my success. My mom especially really pushed me to pursue my dreams. She has also said that I have a gift worth sharing and that my passion for food is so strong. Even the days that i did’t quite believe her yet, she still would push and encourage me. Until finally one day i realized she was right, and she was there still supporting and encouraging me. She was simply waiting for the day that I caught up to what she finally knew.
