We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan “The Son” Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
One of my favorite lines I’ve heard on a song was, “There’s a big difference between being known an being successful”. I think one of the reasons why I find success is because I don’t make it my primary focus, though I’m tempted to so many times. I just focus on getting better and better at my craft and character, and so my success is purely based on my personal growth rather than how many people recognize how “successful” I am.

Applying the principal of focusing on getting better, not bigger, has kept me encouraged and consistent. that consistency has allow success here and there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The thing I love about my artistry is that it’s about as linear as Donald Glover (who is also Childish Gambino). I write music, I perform, I act, and I have creatively directed and authored a graphic novel. The common denominator under it all is that I have been gifted with telling story through music and other mediums. If you give me a craft to explore, I will find a way to tell a story people relate to through it.

That leads me to the lesson I’ve learned. Often people ask me, “So, whats your brand?” or “Whats your genre”, or things of the like. I’ve tried to come up with one but I am just WAY TOO ADVENTUROUS to stay in one place creatively. I was worried I would get nowhere like that, but I’ve found it to be beneficial. I am a huge fan of staying curious in your creative life. Don’t let what you “should do” because of what people know you for, keep you from from exploring new veins of creativity. We got into this thing to have fun, right?

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a big fan of Magnolia Avenue. I would take them daily to a new place to eat and shop on that street, and end it with Melt Ice Cream every time. Then we’d go hike in a park to this waterfall I’ve found at the dam. The we would head back to Magnolia Ave and have dinner. Every day until there are no more options.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my family for shaping me to be a focused and compassionate individual in this world. I’ve had a lot of friends come and go. Some for natural life change and others by breaking trust, but my family and the friends that have stuck around have been a rock to stand on. They deserve a shout out for sure. A book that has changed my life is a book called “With” by Skye Jethani that breaks down how religion and fear keep us from the beauty of being present with life and the people in it. It helped me walk out of religious trauma and find a compassionate message that has trickled into everything I write or create.

Lastly, I want to thank my writers community Growing Pens for always giving me a reason to pick up my pen and express my thoughts.
