We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosselen Castellar Parra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosselen, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is intimidating and scary to me. I would like to avoid it, but I find myself needing to face it when I want to move ahead. As soon as I start to feel too comfortable in my current situation, I know it’s time for a change. For this to happen, I have to risk something, for example, my comfort level at my job, my time investment, and my peace. I have realized that change can only happen through some sort of disruption, large or small.
When I decided to become a massage therapist, I did not realize what I would have to risk to be successful in my profession. I spent long hours studying and practicing my craft. I tried returning to college and realized that there was no career path for me available through the conventional school system. I risked, creating my own path and it has been extremely fulfilling. I am blessed every day with the fruits of my labor. But to get here it was hard, scary, and to be honest I did not have much guidance.
I truly believe in taking risks as soon as possible. There will never be a better time than now. Just make sure it is not a bad decision, financially, physically, and mentally. When you have nothing to lose, it’s worth taking the leap of faith for your future.
What should our readers know about your business?
Hello, I’m Rosselen, a massage therapist and esthetician located in Southlake, Texas. I have over 8 years of experience and specialize in Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage, cupping, and facial massage. My goal is to provide my clients with one-of-a-kind, results-oriented treatments that will leave them feeling relaxed, refreshed, and rejuvenated.
Ashiatsu is a style of massage that is performed using the therapist’s feet. With a custom bar system built overhead, the therapist is able to stabilize and use their feet just like hands. This gives the therapist leverage to use their whole body weight, which can provide a deeper and more effective massage than traditional massage techniques.
Cupping is a tool that uses suction to release muscle tension. The therapist places cups on the skin and then creates a vacuum by removing the air from the cups. This creates a pulling sensation that helps to loosen tight muscles and improve circulation.
My facial massages incorporate unique techniques originating from Russia and Japan. Our sculpting techniques leave your face chiseled and renewed. We pride ourselves in using professional grade products that have results.
I am most proud of my business accomplishments. Every year, I get the chance to prove to myself that it is possible to make a living doing what I love. This encourages me to pursue changing the status quo of the massage therapy profession. I want to elevate it to a level that is accepted and respected by other wellness professions.
I started my business during the pandemic because I had no other choice. All locations were closed due to regulations, but I still needed to work and make a living. Clients were still calling, and some were even praying for someone to show up and help them with their back pain. With my back against the wall, I swallowed my fear and reached out respectfully to clients who I believed would appreciate and enjoy my services during those “unprecedented” times. There was some rejection, and it hurt, but the positive feedback was so overwhelming that I would have done myself a disservice if I decided to stay in the same position. At the same time, I also decided to return to cosmetology school and get my esthetician license. It is rare to find a dual licensed therapist who can perform all treatments. This set me apart from my peers and opened up a whole new category of clients.
It was far from easy, but I will say that most of my struggles were due to belief systems I thought I needed to live by. When I pushed through and started asking for help, networking, and reaching out to clients and businesses, I noticed a shift in myself: I felt more confident.
I would like the world to know that my business is value-driven. I would never do anything that I do not believe in. I have taken the time to study and practice everything that I offer, and I wholeheartedly believe in the effects of my services. If a client is not satisfied or if the service is not for them, I want them to know that I will help them find a solution and refer them to the right person.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in DFW, which means there is an unlimited amount of fun to be had. I love the Southlake area. The square has an “outlet mall” feel, with restaurants and shops all within walking distance of each other. The food in the DFW area is unreal, and you can find anything at just about any price point. For fun, I would probably do a spa day at Spa Castel in Carrollton and eat Korean food in Koreatown. At night, I would attend a dance event in town. DFW is known for its Latin dancing scene, so don’t forget your dancing shoes!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my clients who have supported me through this journey. I would have not been as successful without their willingness to follow my path for success. I also want to give a shoutout to my peers that encourage my growth and support my decisions. It’s a struggle to do it alone, but it doesn’t feel so lonely when you have peers to lean on.
