We had the good fortune of connecting with Roslynn McKenzie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roslynn, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?

How my business helps the community/world is simply being an example. Teen girls and young women are the centerpoint of my life coaching business. They need guidance. They need a road map to help them overcome obstacles, enhance their mindset, enhancing their self-image, and understanding that they can be the change they want to see.

There are so many negative and not-so-flattering images of teen girls and young women plastered everywhere. I believe that by being available to help them and show them a more appropriate ways is essentially important. Together, we can change the narrative and set them on a better path of presenting themselves in a positive, more polished manner, and be a contributor to other teens and young women.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I got started on this journey of becoming a life coach because I saw a need. This stems from experiences I navigated through growing up. I was often teased about being dark-skinned and being short at that. Growing up in the South already has its own stigma, and along with being a female and being dark-skinned, I was a target and usually the butt of other’s jokes.

I was no stranger to being bullied. As we know, children can be brutal! As I witnessed other children being bullied and teased about how they looked and dressed, I also noticed their self-esteem diminish. I watched these same children transition into self-destructive behaviors due to being bullied and teased.

Although I had a very supportive family who always showed me that I was loved and affirmed me, I was one of the blessed few that was able to “keep my head up,” so-to-speak and push past the negativity and pressure.

Over the years, I have learned to embrace the skin I’m in and embrace who I am in all totality. I want to help this generation of young ladies who may be bullied and dealing with low self-esteem or have a poor self-image of themselves. I want to also help our young ladies present themselves as “young ladies” and show them that they can step above what they see in the world and go far beyond what life may have dealt them.

I would like the opportunity to show them that their calling is higher than what they see on social media. I know that most of these young ladies aspire to be greater and I am here to guide them into their greatness. I am extremely passionate about the legacy of the young ladies, our culture, and the values that are instilled in them. I would love to see them sow these values and more positive things into the ones after them.

This is why I started my program. I want to help our future daughters to become well-rounded, confident, and modest women who will be amazing contributors to our communities and beyond.

The road has not always been easy. There are always challenges, be it personal or business. Life/work balance for most, will be a challenge. There are only so many hours in the day and so many things to do, right? Taking care of my daughter will always be my top priority. Making sure that her needs are met in every way and being there for her is extremely important to me. Although it is challenging at times because she is a special needs child, she is what matters the most, everything else can wait.

Other challenges I’ve faced while operating my business are the unexpected expenses and readjusting my budget for those expenses. It is a good idea to have a good business/financial plan and follow it as best as you can. Do not be in a hurry to start your business. Please do your due diligence and research your industry prior to making any decisions and investments. Conduct a market analysis, if need be, for additional information. I found this very insightful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The DFW metroplex has so much to offer and it is vibrant! I love visiting the Toyota Music Factory! The location is great and the area has various restaurants to choose from and there are also all sorts of events and concerts held at Toyota Music Factory. We would definitely visit Reunion Tower and the Bishop Arts District. Dallas has some of the most amazing nighttime views from Reunion Tower. The Bishop Arts District is beautiful and hosts some good restaurants as well.

We would also visit the area lakes and take a two-hour cruise on one of the party boats to relax and have some “aqua-therapy.” You can’t visit Dallas without setting your eyes on AT&T Stadium and the American Airlines Center! Also, we’d stop by to see Big Tex at the State Fair of Texas. There’s so much to do here and whatever someone may be looking for regarding entertainment, they will find it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! I must first thank God for giving me the vision and the opportunity to do this! I am nothing without Him! I must recognize my wonderful Mother, Mrs. Daisy McKenzie, my three sisters, Dina, Paige, and Trinnia, and my sister-in-love, Deitra. I cannot leave out my only brother, Abraham. I would also like to acknowledge my handful of supportive friends who have encouraged me to keep striving for greatness! I am blessed and grateful! I dedicate this Shoutout to them!
