We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosa Elkurd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosa, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea of my business grew for a need to represent people of color in a private sector. I received an emphasis in cultural linguistic diversity through my masters program and felt that I needed to make my services available to my community. Latina’s only represent 8% my entire profession (less than that). Additionally, Latina business owners in our community are not well represented. I wanted to put bilingualism and cultural diversity at the forefront of my practice and focus on patient care.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run a solo practice for speech and language pathology. Although I mostly work with children I also specialize in Fluency disorders, Voice Affirmation and Bilingualism of all ages. I treat both adults and children. I provide services that are client centered and take into considerations cultural and linguistic diversity. I am proud to be a Latina first generation college student that owns her own business! It was a dream of mine and I was determined to fill that space in my community. We don’t have any spanish/English providers around.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since I run my business in Coppell and live in Coppell Ill mentioned some coppell places. I would take them to Cypress Waters were we could walk, chat and enjoy some food. On the weekends, I would take them to our wonderful farmers market (great produce and people). We could go to Andy brown or stay in Coppell for all the activities that take place here- there is a Date Movie Night featuring Casablanca. For dinner we could check out some of the local businesses (we have a diverse array of cuisine in this area).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The University of Maryland and my Mentor Eusabia Mont for establishing the Cultural Linguistic Diversity Track.
