Meet Robin Vernon | Financial Advisor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin Vernon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Roughly 9% of the US population are business owners (sited below) and it continues to be predominately male. I started my first firm in 2005 and had to reinvent myself multiple times to get to the place I am at now. As a female business owner, I find it exciting the pave the path for more diversity in business ownership. I also come from a family of business owners so it was a natural progression to do the same. I am fortunate to have two partners to help shoulder some of the risk of business ownership this go around. My first venture was as a sole entrepreneur and there are pros and cons to both paths.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is Proper Wealth. We started the firm in 2020 during the pandemic which provided its own set of challenges. All three of us had successful practices prior to 2020 and we wanted to do something bigger, different.
We are unique in that we are one of the few firms with a fee only model and we revenue and expense share. Most financial firms work in silos instead of collaboration.
My practice has ebbed and flowed over the years. When children came, I had to reprioritize my time and, surprisingly, I saw a dramatic increase in my productivity and profits.
Being a business owner is rarely easy, but its fun. If you are doing what you love it doesn’t feel like work and that is an amazing place to be. I waited tables during college at a well known chain restaurant and that is the last time I truly felt like I “worked”. Once starting my firm I stepped into my passion and get the opportunity to what I love on a daily basis.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Tallahassee FL which is the Capital. Most people don’t realize that and think it is Miami or Orlando. A trip to Tallahassee would be to visit our Old State Capitol building which was completed in 1945.
I would then go to College Town where there are wonderful restaurants, bars and shopping. Tallahassee has 6 Colleges in our city which makes up a diverse and young population.
Then a trip to the MagLab to see the largest and highest powered magnet lab in the world. Sounds boring but its a pretty amazing place which attracts scientist from around the world.
Driving through our city is beautiful. Tallahassee means “seven hills” so we are a hilly part of Florida. We also have Canopy Roads which are where tress have grown together to provide a “canopy”.
Lastly, I would attend a college sporting event. Football & soccer in the fall, track and tennis in the spring. Plus lots more give us lots of opportunities to get outside and enjoy an event.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
5 Day Weekend is one of my all-time favorite books. It helped open my mind to working efficiently so more of life could be spent doing the things you want to do verses the things you have to do.
I also did 3 years with Strategic Coach and owe my 10x multiplier mindset to that coaching
