We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Neely and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
That ultimately results are not in my control. COVID has taught us as much. Consequently, I can remove a lot of stress from my life by instead focusing on the process – by giving it my all, being faithful and excellent. This mentality then helps me remove fear of sub-optimal results from my work process and enables me to view the present and future with more hope, ultimately creating a better work process which often leads to better results. The mentality of work is fascinating and definitely requires a lot of discipline!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
InspireMore stands apart in the media industry because we are solely focused on good news and inspiring media. In an age when millions of people are clinically depressed from media (negative news and harmful social media), we highlight the good in the world and share it with a community of 10+ million people. It has not been an easy journey, but has been a blessing. Typically in media a company needs millions of dollars of funding and to make a dent – we started with hardly any funding and a 3 person team. We have had to grind and sweat and work incredibly hard to reach our scale. But in the trial, there is the greatest polishing and learning. Our favorite quote as a team is “Never doubt that a small dedicated group of people can’t change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has” (Margaret Mead). That is our hope as a company – to inspire humanity to live for more – and we believe media is an incredibly powerful medium to do so, to spark change around the globe.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend is coming to Dallas, it is going to be all about eating. I am taking them to get a great steak at Bob’s, some Barbecue at Pecan Lodge, and then Mexican food at Manny’s. One of my favorite places is NorthPark Mall. So we are definitely going to walk around, people watch, grab some snacks from the food court or Eataly, and then hopefully go see a movie.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, to my parents and wife. In a leadership position it is absolutely critical to have people that encourage you and breathe perspective into your life, especially when you are seeking to serve and lead your team well. My parents and my wife have been instrumental in inspiring me so that I can then in turn serve others well. Secondly, to my co-founder Hunter and to the InspireMore team. I work with some of the best people in the industry who deeply care about building a great business, doing it with integrity, and helping people all over the globe. That is rare. Our team is the secret in the “secret sauce.” Third, to the Kanakuk Institute – it is a biblical leadership program that deepened my faith and helped me focus on purpose, on “The Why.” Really, the shout out here is to Jesus, but KI was incredibly impactful in growing my purpose-focused mentality – why are we doing this? what ultimately will matter here? what is the purpose of work? how can I succeed within that purpose? These questions help me be more strategic and think about the most effective strategies for our team, revenue initiatives, user engagement, etc.
