We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Gould and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting a business was a pretty typical one. I want to work for myself, if I can work this hard for someone else I can work this hard for myself. However those can be the worst reasons to start a business. As a kid both my parents owned small businesses, mom an in home day care and dad a small lawn service. I always wanted to own my own business just watching them, but it was about 5 years after high school before I actually did.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The road to this point has not been easy and the road to where we would like to go will not be any easier. When I first started low price and good work is what set me apart. But once in business you realize low price is just a starting point and not always a good one. I am proud of our current team. We are really trying to offer the best customer service we can, and taking a serve mentality into our business and culture. Over coming challenges is a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly challenge, there is always a challenge that you are going to face. You just have to overcome it with determination at persistence. I think reading is vital to business growth, learning from others who have been in your shoes before. Also learn from industries outside your own.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not a big on hanging out or partying. But I would most likely take them to a restaurant called Campuzanos in Dallas. Probably hit up a comedy club, Hyenas or Improv. A movie for sure. I would love it if my home were built, which we are in the process of building now, because to me nothing is more relaxing for a city dweller than country living. So I would love to just host them at our ranch in East, Texas. Coffee and breakfast on the porch, home cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner and good conversation!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Andrea. She came on board with the business about 2 years after I started it. I’m a visionary but she has the business mind. So without her their would be know SSP. Both my parents Robert and Priscilla Gould, obviously also had a part in my decision to want to own a business.
