We had the good fortune of connecting with Riza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Riza, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Chasing a dream is a difficult thing. Your trying to make the world see your worth and if your starting from rock bottom it’s nothing it’ll definitely feel hopeless at times. I’ve been through countless failures/ deadends through out my music career and even doubted my capabilities as an artist. It’s hard to put your %1000 into something and see it go unnoticed it’s every artists nightmare. The one thing I knew forsure about myself was that I’m destined for something great and who would’ve thought that that alone was enough to create the spark I needed. The thing some artist don’t understand is that they are already the best at their craft because it is only them that can create it. Believing that your work is absolutely the best and no one can compare to it is how an artist should think. I understand that there are some artist out there that will compare their work to others or be insecure about their work because they saw someone make something better. Thinking like this is poison to the mind. Doubt is the enemy of an artist and should always be treated as such because letting yourself doubt your own craft is also saying you doubt yourself completely as a person. Never let doubt or fear ever come in between you and your craft always doubt your doubts before you doubt yourself. A true artist makes their craft and life as one and it becomes part of the way they live like a reflex. If you feel like your journey to making your dream a reality becomes overwhelming always remember this. If you feel/know your destined for something great then you already know your destination, you just have to be patient enough to see the rest of your story play out. You can’t start a movie and go straight to the ending and expect to know everything about the movie. Know you are the best at what you do and BELIEVE IT with your mind body and soul. Artist sacrifice their lives to inspire others almost as if we’re soldiers of God sent to make a change for the better. So to all my artist out there that are wondering if you should keep going. Keep fighting your battles until the world remembers you for your victories. we speak the loudest and there are people out who can’t speak for themselves so be their voice and roar.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started singing when I was 18 but I had no idea what music notes were I never took any singing lessons or was ever in choir, I just knew what sounded good. From there I just decided to follow where ever the music took me. Along the way I was blessed enough to gain loyal friends that had the same vision as I did and helped me build my music career to what it is now. Without them I honestly don’t know where I would be today and coming from the city we came from, trust was not an easy thing to come by. We’ve gone through endless amounts of wasted time and pointless opportunities that lead us back to where we started. But realizing that we didn’t need anyones help and that we could build an empire on our own helped us to stay motivated and kept us busy from ever feeling sorry for ourselves. We stopped making “getting signed by a label” our main priority and started focusing on how we can start a business and start our own label. I want to encourage artist out there to not stick to one skill. Teach yourself to have many skills and use those skills to create more and more opportunities for yourself. Yes, I love singing and making music but I also love racing Hondas, acting, martial arts etc. never depend on one skill. Never limit yourself. A true artist has no barriers within the mind, only solutions and ways to figure out how to break those barriers. Learn to use that same passion and drive you have learning one craft and use it to learn another. This way of thinking has helped me overcome all my fears and doubts and the less you care of what others think of you and your art, the more freedom you gain and you become limitless.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To me a perfect night to me is getting with a group of friends and taking drives through some windy back trails in our loud Hondas and put our driving skills to the test. You could say I live like a real-life InitalD character but that would be an understatement. All I need for a good night is my Honda, some friends and smooth roads. I don’t party or drink so none of that stuff is fun to me. Partying is a complete waste of time to me. What’s fun about drinking till you end up falling and puking all over the place and making a fool out of yourself and making nothing but mistakes you’ll regret later? It’s probably the dumbest way to spend your time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
