We had the good fortune of connecting with Rī Wolf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rī, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been drawn to music from a very young age. Growing up listening and watching The Jackson 5, Otis Redding or The Temptations was inspiring to me. Watching them perform with such soul and passion was like watching someone with a super power and was definitely something I wanted to have. Then when I started seeing blues legends like BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, it just took this whole super power concept to another level. Now I realized that there were artists out there tapping into something almost supernatural. They were speaking through their instruments and that really drew me to the guitar. From the age of about 22 on I’ve been writing, recording and performing in some capacity.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It’s been a very challenging road to get where I am now. It’s been very up and down and I’ve even quit music as I’ve mentioned. At one point, I honestly thought my music career was over. Thankfully during the Covid pandemic, I found my passion for music again and a renewed “voice”. Once I decided to come back to music, I brought a whole new attitude and work ethic to it which has definitely helped me make big strides thus far. I try to approach music like an Olympic level athlete might approach their training. It’s a 24/7 everyday thing that I’m dedicated to…rehearsing, networking, marketing, booking, recording. All of it is important and I’m definitely treating my career with an elevated level of professionalism. As far as my brand, I’m really trying to stay as close as possible to the music that “raised” me. I feel like the unique combination of Blues, Americana and Country along with good storytelling is something that speaks to alot of folks.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being up in West Texas, Palo Duro Canyon is one of the most spectacular places in the region. It is humbling and definitely makes you feel like part of something much bigger. It’s a great place to hike, camp or picnic. A few of the favorite spots in Amarillo/Canyon area might be Feldman’s Diner, Goldenlight Cafe and Music Venue, Starlight Ranch, Bluesky Burgers, Pondaseta Brewing Company, Hodgetown Ballpark and Downtown Amarillo…just to name a few.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Kristen has been my biggest supporter and push forward most recently. I took almost 9 years away from music, but as I found the guitar in my hands again about 2 years ago, she really gave me the support and encouragement to give music another shot and I’m so lucky and grateful to have her behind me. My parents and family have always been huge fans and supporters and definitely gave me the initial launch into a music career.
