We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Slemmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, how do you think about risk?
I believe risk is a necessary part of life. It challenges you, scares you, excites you, makes you question yourself and your abilities. Personal or professional growth will not happen unless you’re willing to put yourself out there and try. A rule I follow and share with my kids and my staff is to do something that scares you every once in a while. Something that takes you out of your comfort zone and shows you different possibilities.

I would not be where I am today, living my dream as a studio owner, without the risks I took to get here.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I received a BS in Exercise Physiology from Texas Tech University. My first job was in cardiac and pulmonary rehab at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. I loved the medical side of fitness, working with patients in all stages of recovery. My next career move was to the YMCA. I held jobs as a group fitness instructor, childcare worker, group fitness and personal training manager, health and wellness director and finally grant writer and special events coordinator for a variety of YMCA branches in Oklahoma and Texas. I learned so much about the non-profit industry, living the mindset of health and wellness for all. After 20 years with the YMCA I moved to a private country club and experienced a whole new world of private memberships. I also gained experience in managing an aquatics program and childcare. My final move was back to a hospital setting as a manager of a fitness center. Because I was willing to take risks and try new jobs in areas I was inexperienced in (grant writing, special events, aquatics) I built a well-rounded career for myself, I am proud of the knowledge I have gained in all aspects of the health and wellness industry. This knowledge, I believe, has made it possible for me to successfully own and operate my own studio. I want the world to know that I am passionate about helping anyone, regardless of age, ability, injury, etc.. achieve success in their personal health and wellness goals. Prime Life Pilates & Fitness wants to help people socially, mentally and physically and my staff and I have the experience to do so!

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
First and foremost I need to thank my husband Steve for his support and encouragement throughout my career and all the risks I took to advance professionally. I am also grateful for every boss I have had since I started working when I was 16. I may not have recognized some of the learning opportunities at the time, but every leader I worked for has taught me life lessons, good and bad.
