Meet Rachel Olson | Owner and Cake Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Olson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, what role has risk played in your life or career?
This is a constant internal debate. Over the past 8 years I have learned that you cannot grow without taking risks. It is cliche, but it is true. You need to at least try. Most people fail. I failed many times taking risks with my business. But that is how you grow. You learn from your mistakes. It makes you stronger and know what you need to do differently in the future.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My business started with banana bread and has transformed into buttercream cakes. My background is in hospitality management so the business part comes easy. I had never decorated a cake until my neighbor asked me many years ago. I was nervous but I did it! And since then I have created over 600 cakes. Many people don’t know that I am a self taught cake artist. I learned all my skills from watching you tube and a lot of trial and error. My cakes are decorated with homemade buttercream, every batch is homemade. I truly love what I do and I love being able to bring people’s cake visions to life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We for sure would head to Legacy West. Sit outside and drink key lime martinis and eat coconut shrimp at Tommy Bahama. I’d also love to take her to Downtown McKinney and Grapevine for shopping and some wine tasting. A quick overnight trip up to Choctaw casino for sure. Have a spa day and play some slots. For her last night I’d love to take her to Bob’s in McKinney for a nice steak dinner and catch some live music at Hub 121.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Shoutout is to all of my customers. They are the BEST! Without their support I would not be here or have come this far. I have families I have baked for since 2016 and it means so much to me. My customers have become my friends. Watching their family’s grow, and being able to create memories for their milestones is so amazing to me. I never would have thought I would still be baking when I started this business. But my customers keep me going. They send me messages of encouragement, ideas, quick hello’s. I just couldn’t do this without them.
