We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachana Cherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachana, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It started with my son’s 5th birthday. He wanted a “special” angry birds themed cake. Being a crafty mom, I decided to try my hand at a functional angry birds’ cake. While it was a stretch of my imagination, the results were impressive. Not only was there an angry birds’ cake, there were also fondant angry birds to be used in slingshots, pigs, and other game pieces. The entire set-up was edible, making it a complete angry birds’ experience. The kids had a wonderful time launching the birds from the slingshot. While my son enjoyed his “something special”, family and friends were in awe of my creation. This led to me receiving orders from family and friends, and then friends of friends, and thus, Edible Perfections was born. What started as a hobby to impress my kids, is now a growing business, with my edible creations being shipped across the globe.

My business, Edible Perfections, is edible artistry! My one-of-a-kind creations are made with highest quality ingredients and ingenious designs. I design and create custom cakes and cupcakes for local customers. I also also create and ship edible cake decorations and toppers for customers across the world. My cakes, whether multi-tiered, multi-layered or sculpted, are made to order. I work with the customer for a completely customized personal creation to match the themes of their occasions. I have created hundreds of custom cakes for birthdays, baby showers, graduations, social occasions and weddings. My edible cake and cupcake toppers are hand-crafted with fondant and can be used to instantly personalize any cake or cupcake. We carefully pack and ship these to ensure they arrive in-tact, and are ready-to-use as soon as they’re delivered. After surviving Cancer, when I finally left the hospital in April 2017, I was a shadow of my previous self. The intensive chemos, prolonged ICU hospitalization, and multiple surgeries left me wheelchair-bound for a long time. After undergoing months of physical therapy, I learned how to walk again. And, began rebuilding my life. Through my recovery and physical therapy, I doubted if I’d ever reopen my business. In a business where the products are creative handmade objects that require hours of work, sustained health issues felt like an impossible obstacle to overcome. I remained determined and restarted my business in Oct 2017. It took me a few months to re-establish my presence. It was a much-needed exercise in regaining my sense of independence and self-worth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a Indian (South Asian) at heart. All my favorite joints are Indian or Indo-Chinese eateries. Thankfully DFW has a wide selection of Indian restaurants especially in Irving and Frisco. Picnics with family or friends at Lake Lewisville or Grapevine Lake are one of my favorite activities in Spring / Summer.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Having survived Cancer, support from my family and friends was crucial to staying in business. I had to stop all business activities for about two years, and I thought it would be a long shot to get back into the game given my physical situation. My business is now thriving and this would have been impossible without the active support and assistance from my husband, kids, extended family, and friends.
