We had the good fortune of connecting with Peter Kreta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Peter, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is how you grow. In my sets I’m always looking for ways to elevate the moment and push the party that much more. You have to be aware of your surroundings and try new things so you can bring your ideas to life. I love taking risks. Sometimes they work out! And when they don’t it’s good to look back and say to yourself “oh, okay I can do that better” or “next time I’ll try this instead”. Don’t get me wrong, there is always a time and place to stay in your world, but I never want my sets or performances to feel stale. I grew up as a Jazz musician, there is a lot of improvisation involved. When you can let your ideas develop and better tell a story and share emotions musically, I think that’s where the magic is and how you can stand out. How else are you going to get better if you won’t even try?

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve got a passion for music and storytelling. As a multi-instrumentalist and composer, the art of DJing has always captivated my interest and energy. My favorite part about it is that there is always room to improve and expand to make sets more personal and meaningful to the audience. I’m a student of the craft and I love listening to DJs who are performing at the top of their game. It’s definitely not easy, there’s a lot of mental hurdles to overcome. But if you surround yourself with support from people who are willing to help you grow then you quickly realize you become a product that showcases the love for the art – and that’s keeps you going. There are sets that feel better than others, and sometimes people aren’t receptive to what you’re playing. With enough experience you can identify ways to adjust your sets by switching vibes or creating unique moments so that you can bring your audience on the journey. That’s really what defines success in my eyes is if the audience feels something they weren’t expecting and for a brief moment they can forget about their troubles and be in the moment with me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Texas is all about BBQ, we would smoke some meat in the back yard, hit a couple breweries and hang out on the lake. I’d take them to Bishop Arts to go listen to Jazz at Reveler’s Hall, check out American Airlines Center and Globe Life Field (definitely Texas Live). The culture here is to eat, drink, and hang out. That’s exactly what we’d do 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my parents for supporting me during the great times and the tough times; my childhood piano teacher, Ms. Greenbaum, for the encouragement and opportunities to perform at a young age. All of my music teachers, especially Brenda Thompson and Jay Mason for their patience and guidance. Glenn Roush and Nate Nelson and all of the DJs with LeForce for the incredible opportunities and mentorship in the Entertainment Industry. And certainly, I could not have made it this far without the love from my incredible wife, Courtney.
