We had the good fortune of connecting with Pavel Overtchouk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pavel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I am a physician specializing in interventional cardiology. Along with a few colleagues we observed that some patients have complications during heart surgeries. One complication is most dreaded: stroke. Stroke causes paralysis, dementia and increases the risk of dying in the days after the surgical procedure. Predicting which patients are going to have a stroke has been considered as impossible due to a complex entanglement of various factors. But we though that with the recent progress in artificial intelligence such relationships could be captured. Hence, using my skills in artificial intelligence software development, I built an initial software able to predict which patients could be at high risk of stroke. We tested the concept in clinical practice and observed good results. This encouraged me to transfer the technology to the industry and make a commercial product out of this software. The goal is to make the software accessible for everybody and reduce the risk of stroke related to heart surgery.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A close relationship between medical knowledge and artificial intelligence expertise is key to developing useful products in predictive medicine. This type of relationships is difficult to find or create given both disciplines requiring deep expertise that is hard to find. I believe we have this relationship in place, and it will stir us in the right direction. Nevertheless, creating a start-up product that would fit the healthcare market is a arduous process, especially without initial funding. It forces founders to multitask and learn how to tackle research, product development, regulatory review, intellectual property protection, sales and so on. And there is no real way around it: you must tackle it yourself.
So perhaps what we would like the World to know most is that we believe in our ability to improve patients’ lives and we are working hard for them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This situation has actually recently happened. Although I am new myself to the area, I really like the different spots of nature in and around Dallas. The Arboretum is a relaxing place to spend a few hours in. The State Fair of Texas is a very fun place to visit. Nowhere else you will see a half-ton gigantic hog. Then the Dallas World Aquarium is a beauty of animal diversity and internal architectural bright. And if you’re into sports, there are the Cowboys, the Mustangs and the Mavericks teams.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Patients are the main source of inspiration for healthcare professionals. Their grievances and need for help gets us up in the middle of the night in the hope that we could be helpful. Patients give us purpose and inspiration to become better scientifically and as human beings. I am grateful to all my patients and fellow healthcare workers because they are an endless source of ideas for how to make humanity healthier and happier.
