We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Newlands and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Creating value! It is so important that I do not come across as a salesperson. I am in the people industry, so building relationships and helping my clients feel confident in their clothes brings me so much joy. I want the men and women who come to me for help and guidance to know that my goal is to educate them on what flatters their body type, complexion, hair color, and eye color while keeping their lifestyle and goals forefront.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have always been interested in fashion for as long as I can remember. If you count my first retail job at the age of 15, I’ve technically been in the industry for 24 years! Clothestime, American Eagle, and shortly after graduating HS, moving to NYC to pursue a full-time modeling career.

When the economy crashed in 2009, it was time to shift. I continued a part-time modeling career while pursuing a full-time degree in merchandising/marketing. A school project turned into a business, and a women’s accessories boutique based out of South Florida was born. My parents ran the brick-and-mortar while I did all the buying, email marketing, and social media from California.

Teamwork made the dream work, but after four years in business, we decided to sell.

For months I researched positions in styling, personal shopping, wardrobe consulting, etc., and kept coming across a Nordstrom personal styling company called Trunk Club. I was so intrigued! A place where men and women could come for a personal shopping experience outside of the mall? I was s in. I packed my things and moved to Dallas. I got hired as a stylist but quickly moved to a Senior Stylist + Custom Specialist position.

After four years with the company, it was time to go out on my own. With my background, it was the right time and decision for me to move forward with my career.

Every experience inspired how I deliver my services. Starting in someone’s closet is the most important step, because how will I know what a new client needs if I don’t know what he/she has? Step 2 is my favorite service, wardrobe styling. I get to help my clients curate and maximize what’s in their closet! We build complete outfits and photograph the looks making it easy to dress for any occasion. Both services set us up for the overall success of your wardrobe and allows us to shop with intention.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is not one specific person. Every supportive manager, friend, family member, client, and stranger who saw my potential, complimented my work, gave me guidance, showed me grace, and pushed me to continue my pursuit of happiness in the industry I am most passionate about, deserves to know that they are part of where I am today.
