We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Every time I feel like giving up, something unexpected happens—a call, a text, or even a random message on social media reminding me of the impact I’ve had on someone’s life. These small, quiet affirmations are what keep me going.

It’s so easy to underestimate the difference we make, especially in our own little corner of the world. That’s why it matters so much to pause, even briefly, to express appreciation. Let people know how they’ve influenced you. A few kind words can be the very thing that helps someone keep moving forward.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I may be a novice Djembe drummer, but I don’t think there’s anyone more excited or moved by the sound of a Djembe orchestra than I am. I’ve been a lifelong patron of the arts, and I initially approached African drumming as just another opportunity to connect with the artists I’ve long admired from a distance. But everything changed the day I stumbled upon a drum circle at an event at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center.

That unexpected encounter led me to Pan African Connection’s weekly drum circle—and what began as a simple curiosity has grown into a journey of learning, sharing, and performing across the metroplex and beyond. I never imagined myself as a performing artist. Not in a million years. But the feeling I get when I play—the joy, the love, the spiritual connection—is undeniable.

Despite having no musical background, no stage experience, and no idea how to book a gig, this Djembe journey has taken flight in ways that feel nothing short of divine. The grace, the favor, the opportunities—it’s all overwhelming, humbling, and deeply affirming.

I’m still human. I wrestle with imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and fear. But none of that outweighs my desire to learn, to grow, and to share this Djembe Djoy with the world.

What I want people to know is this: when joy finds you—dive in. If something lights you up and your happiness has the power to uplift others, do it. Life is short, but it’s incredibly sweet. Take the reins you’ve been given and trust the process. Joy isn’t always easy, fast, or expected—but it’s real. And when you embrace it fully, it becomes a part of who you are.

For me, that joy is Djembe Djoy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I just wrapped up a week hosting company, and let me tell you—we drummed our way across the entire metroplex! If the week kicks off on a Sunday, then it has to start at Pan African Connection’s Drum Circle Sunday. That’s non-negotiable.

Drumming has truly become a central part of my life over the past two years. On Tuesday nights, I’m in Oak Cliff for class, and Saturdays are usually split between the South Dallas Cultural Center and the Sammon’s Center for the Arts, where I join a vibrant drum and dance class in the morning. Depending on the week, you might also catch me at a spontaneous drum jam somewhere around town.

Outside of drumming, my social life is pretty grounded. I start my mornings with a walking group at the mall and end my evenings with peaceful walks alongside my dog. I love being outdoors, so any visitors can expect plenty of time spent in nature—especially at the beautiful parks around Cedar Hill.

Now, I’ll admit—I’m not much of a foodie, and my guests definitely let me hear about it, lol. But if you spend a week with me, expect rhythm, fresh air, and a whole lot of Djembe joy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Pan African Connection’s weekly healing drum circle has become a wellspring of motivation, inspiration, joy, and deep fulfillment. The unwavering commitment to community, the uplifting energy, and the powerful sense of unity that radiates from PAC are truly rejuvenating on every level.

It’s within that sacred space that I’ve connected with others who understand the profound healing, purpose, and spiritual resonance of African drumming. PAC stands as a shining example of what it means to give back, build up, and reach out.

I’ve found immense peace in witnessing the transformation of those who walk through its doors—people who leave with renewed hope, joy, love, and a sense of belonging. It’s an environment that continually reminds me of who I strive to be, what I need to become, and how even the smallest acts can create lasting ripples of change.
