We had the good fortune of connecting with Pat Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pat, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In all honesty, it was never my thought to start a business. I knew two things, I didn’t like clocking in but I needed money so I just started using my talents to make money and eventually the money grew. I was just hustling it wasn’t until a few years ago when my cousin Gavin Hawkins broke down to me that I had my own business, I just needed to legitimize it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I’m doing truly depends on the day and who I am for a client depends on the client. Capital P Ventures is my company and I simply use it as an umbrella for my services which include Public Speaking, Youth Mentorship, Artist Development, Music Production, Songwriting and Live Music Arranging. These are all things that were initially fueled by passion and as my skill level grew in each area people started paying me. The difficulty came once I had to do these things to survive. So I had to start thinking and moving as a business. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is just because you are doing something you love and would do it for free, doesn’t mean you should. I try to teach those who are coming after me that being great is better than being rich.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m honestly not the “going out” type of guy just because work keeps me going a lot. In the times that I do free up for leisure activities it’s most time spent with close family and friends. However, I Love My City, Little Rock, Arkansas so I wouldn’t neglect a time to show the “sauce” of the city. For Food I’d have to take a friend to Brewsters for some good Catfish, Samantha’s for some amazing Lamb-chops, KHaul or Mighty Crab for seafood, Uncle T’s for the Coldcut Sandwich, Irianas for Pizza, Kilwins for some great dessert and If you want that home cooking we have to pull up on Paisley Crutchfield, she never disappoints.
After that, I’m a city boy with family in the country so I’m looking for a 4 wheeler and a trail to drive fast on.
I’m also into a quick Dave and Busters run of Mario Kart or a GoKart race at Big Rock fun park. Then, we could end the stay listening to some great live music downtown at one of our many nightlife venues.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Family Is EVERYTHING!!! I know that seems cliche but I truly would not be here without the foundation of my mom and dad, the accountability of my younger brothers Christian and Marcus, the support of my Wife Alicia and my new found motivation, my baby girl Parker. I don’t have the, “I did this by myself” story. I’m truly the result of an extremely supportive cast who I’d take up pages naming but I make it a priority to make sure they know exactly who they are.
