We had the good fortune of connecting with Onyi Odunukwe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Onyi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Eliminating ego has undoubtedly been one of the most impactful changes I’ve made, and it has played a pivotal role in our business’s growth and improvement. Additionally, we have achieved sustainable growth by strategically focusing on unit profitability and optimizing store operations. Equally important is our commitment to empowering our staff, helping them develop into strong leaders and potential future owners.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Glo Tanning is a luxury sun tanning and spa service. We believe in providing a luxury experience at an affordable price. Our true mission is to empower individuals to embrace self-care and self-love as essential elements of their wellness journey. By offering luxurious tanning and skin wellness experiences, we inspire confidence and positivity, helping each client and employee shine from the inside out.

It was not easy getting started in my early 20s. I made a ton of mistakes and overcame several crucial hurdles. This is also why I began franchising in 2020. I felt that other people inside the industry could learn and benefit from my mistakes and the solutions that my team and I spent tireless hours correcting.

The biggest thing that I learned is the power of we. That is what makes franchising a uniquely fulfilling experience. I have the pleasure of engaging with business owners who are like-minded and solution-oriented. I also have had the privilege to build a fantastic corporate staff that shares our vision. We invite not only collaboration but also criticism. It is the way that we grow together and become stronger.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Both my wife and I are big sports fans so any time a game is in town we are going. I am an Arkansas Razorback fan so always Go Hogs. The Mavericks are always a fun time as well.

For restaurants, I love Lola’s Nigerian restaurant and also Roland Jamaican. I am generally never the planner in the group so I am the worst person to ask for an itinerary.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My leadership team is exceptional, and I often reflect that my greatest strength lies not in any specialized skills, but in my ability to motivate individuals and place them in roles where they can thrive and contribute most effectively.
