We had the good fortune of connecting with Nyeisha James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nyeisha, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The important factor behind the success of my brand is holding true to the fundamental reasons I started my business. I began Aura’s Events LLC knowing I wanted to give people an opportunity to gather. I believe that gathering together be it for a formal occasion or just because is one of the greatest gifts of life. I envisioned my business as a way to create an atmosphere. The “aura” of the event is reflected in my branding. Each part of my business reflects my goal of human connectedness.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I wanted to own a wedding venue for as long as I can remember. I worked at an event venue in college and planned numerous events for friends and family. But taking that path was not without risk. So I decided to pursue a career with stability. Believe it or not I was an educator for more than a decade. I enjoyed teaching and loved being a part of so many families. With the support of my husband I finally decided to step out and begin my event company. Right now Aura’s Events LLC offers luxury picnics and tepee slumber parties. Eventually I want to expand to offer rental décor for those who want to create DIY events.
My journey has been filled with many lessons. I have a degree in Communications but I took for granted the marketing aspect of starting a business. As a company of one it’s important to have an understanding of all things. There were times when I realized that I needed to outsource. During those times I was very grateful for the relationships I’ve built. I have a network that I am able to tap into that helps my business run more effectively. As I continue building my business I remind myself to learn from failures and revel in my successes.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the DFW area where we would go would depend on the season! There is always so much to do. I adore small town DFW!
If it were a fall visit then that is the perfect time for antique and unique shopping. My favorite downtowns to visit are Grapevine, McKinney and Roanoke. Roanoke has two of my favorite places, Oak Street Pie Company and Mugg’s Bakery. There is also the cutest little candy store called Hey Sugar. Watauga is also home to Lonestar Antiques, where my daughters Kelsey and McKenzie have a booth (booth KELS).
Since my best friend and I both have kids then we would definitely check out kid friendly activities, like the Perot Museum, Epic Waterpark, and the Fort Worth Stockyards.
Of course there is the Coyote Drive In located in Fort Worth. We would take a day to get outside. Lake Ray Roberts in Pilot Point is my favorite state park. The beach area is so serene.
We would spend most every day starting in the town of Justin. Visiting my favorite gelato shop Santini’s Sweets and Gelato. We would also visit my favorite thrift store Thrifted It.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Starting a business requires risk and I was initially very hesitant to take the plunge. There are two people that I thank daily for believing in me. My husband Roger is my number one fan. His encouragement keeps me going. Next, is my grandmother. She has always loved me, for me. My business is named for my grandmother Ora, her home was always a place to gather. Anyone was welcome. Understanding how important human connection is sparked my love of hosting. Even when I went away to college I remember calling her on days when I was uncertain or nervous about something. Her words still ring true “Do what you can and forget the rest”.
