We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Binion and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nikki, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is literally the driving force behind my life and career. Taking a gamble on myself and my abilities has opened up many doors and windows. More than you know we all take risk everyday . Whether it be me taking the risk that the public will be receptive of the content and efforts that I put out or everyday employees, taking the risk that when they go to their place of work they will still have a job to provide for themselves and their families. I choose to bet on me! My God given talents and acquired knowledge are things that I have learned to leverage and use to my benefit and the fact that it is nothing anyone can take from me is the icing on the top. I play a very intricate part in controlling my destiny.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In this industry today. I am more than just a hairstylist! To some I am a stylist, therapist, encourager, friend, teacher, business partner and motivator to name a few. What I like to think is something that sets me apart is my ability to speak to the need. Which means I listen. I ask the questions that most won’t ask and I educate you on your overall wellbeing. Hair is just the surface. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very detailed part when it comes to feeling good about yourself but when you have complete harmony inside and out, everything tends to fall in place. Getting to this place took a lot of practice, fails, wins and building confidence in myself and the knowledge that I have. I used to want to do some of EVERYTHING until I realized being better at one thing and building on to that was better. I stopped trying to be everything for everybody because in doing that I found that I neglected myself and what I really wanted. It wasn’t easy but It was worth it. Along the way I have lost clients, friends and colleagues but as the saying goes, “everyone is not meant to go to every part of your journey with you.” My Brand is my baby and its centered and built on feel good things, love, encouragement, excellence, flavor & class, and short hair. Don’t give up on your dreams cause your dreams won’t give up on you!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok! So we’re gonna just act like we aren’t in the midst of COVID times and have a blast, lol ! I absolutely love food, fun and historically yet quirky spots, so our first stop is to Sundance Square to tour downtown Fortworth area where we can catch some live music, art, shopping, yummy eats and craft hard cider! Then we are going to go back home and chill and get ready for a cool kickback in Deep Elum at Sandaga 813. Next day we can catch a late brunch and farmers market action in the Dallas Bishop Arts District while catching some sun, cool finds and great photo ops. Sunday can be a chill day on the lawn with some bbq brisket and wine that is, after we check out The shops at Clearfork but that’s only if we don’t decide to go hang out at the Dallas African American Museum for art, Brunch and cultured Black goodness !!! OKAY!!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to take a moment and thank my family for always rooting me on and having the biggest banner in the stands. And my clients. Thanks for having more confidence in me than I sometimes have in myself. Y’all rock. Lastly but definitely no less important, thanks to all of the rock star stylist, barbers and black entrepreneurs who have come before me and paved the way. Y’all have placed down the bricks and left behind tips so that I could avoid some of the unnecessary pitfalls that y’all went through. I appreciate that.
