We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Maze and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, what do you attribute your success to?
I think people hear or use the phrase “entrepreneur” and associate it with creating something revolutionary or inventing something that doesn’t exist. I think far more frequently, successful businesses are built in already-proven markets by doing something differently or better than the existing options. That’s how Mazens came to be; I took something another company was already doing and did it in a more professional, approachable way while modernizing what I felt were outdated processes. Our focus on never being complacent has given us a pathway to success in an industry where it seemed the norm was to do the absolute least possible.

What should our readers know about your business?
I believe in doing right by your employees and customers, in that order. It still hits me sometimes that what I’ve built is extremely uncommon, but the success of it is no longer solely up to me. That realization means trusting and taking risks on others, which can be uncomfortable at times, but if you believe that you’ve hired the right people, it’s the only path forward. The pressure of employing is a privilege; others and their families are now reliant on your company to improve their lives. If treating them right isn’t the highest priority, what is? Every employer should be working towards the day where they can say, “if I’m not here tomorrow, this business will survive and my people will be fine”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I own a paintball company, it only feels right to answer this question with the best paintball spots. Paintball FIT in Waxahachie is world-class in every way. It’s a family-run business and the best tournament field in the country, they are single-handedly responsible for getting hundreds/thousands of new players into our sport.

The crew at DFW Adventure Park also deserves a shout-out for running a welcoming, organized venue for players of every skill level.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Mazens wouldn’t be Mazens without a whole bunch of people. I’d have never even started playing paintball if it wasn’t for Rob Mann, captain of the Miami University paintball team in 2011. Once I started to gain some traction, I had amazing teammates and friends who helped along the way, especially Kelly Crossen, aka “Employee Zero”.

None of our continued growth would be possible without some of the incredible employees I’ve had the privilege of working with, namely Alex Mott, Adam Pender, Nathan DeMott, Grey Passmore and David Durkin. I’ve also had amazing contractors in the last few years who have enabled my brand to reach new heights; Cameron Staroske, LeeAnn Passmore and Matt Engles of The In-House Collective.

And last but not least, any successful entrepreneur has to have an incredible spouse and I’ve got the best of the best. Kels, thank you for your unwavering support over the years. I told you I’d get the inventory out of the house at some point.

I truly believe I have the best team in the industry. I believe that taking care of my “circle” first will yield the best long-term results for both the business and the individuals that make it up.
