We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
The mission of UPLIFT Fitness is to help gay men with their fitness goals whether it’s building muscle, dropping body fat, or just trying to live a healthier lifestyle. We specifically work with gay men because we not only want it to be a safe space for our community, but we also take fitness beyond just meal plans and workouts. We focus heavily on Mindset Coaching. We teach out clients that our daily thoughts will dictate the behaviors leading to an overall outcome. We’ve helped over 400 gay men and we’re just getting started.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an Online Coach that helps gay men with their health and fitness goals. I started my career as a Corporate University Recruiter, recruiting college students for internships and full-time development programs. I found a passion in recruiting at the university level because when I was in school I had no guidance or knowledge on how to create a resume or look for jobs for after I graduated. It brought me joy that I was able to not only help students land their first job, but I also loved mentoring students at the freshmen and sophomore levels choose the right major and make strategic moves that would eventually help them when they were ready to start applying. I have been able to change thousands of lives over the years in the corporate world. I’ve taken that passion for helping people into fitness. When I started my fitness journey I had no idea where to start and I struggled to find the motivation to keep going. I’ve been able to use my skillset from my recruiting and mentorship background with helping gay men in their fitness journey whether they’ve been working out for years or have never walked into a gym before.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
No matter what my friend enjoys, I’d always start the day with a workout – whether it’s weight lifting or a cycle class at my favorite studio, iice fitness. After we set the tone for the day I’d take them to Lower Greenville for some good food and tons of great drink options. We’d then need to get our steps in and support some local businesses so I’d then take them over to the Bishop Arts District so we could walk, shop, and check out some of the best hidden gems in Dallas. For dinner I always like to find a good rooftop that has a view of downtown. Dallas has such a breathtaking skyline that looks incredible at night.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to give a shoutout to my partner in crime, Angel Serrata. He was with me at the start of my fitness journey and taught me about the mindset approach to fitness. After two years of hitting milestones on the scale, in the gym, and in the kitchen he then asked me to help him build this community. The last two years he’s been mentoring me, encouraging me to get out of my comfort zone, and he’s become one of my best friends. I started working out because I simply wanted to look better in the mirror, but 4 years later my passion for fitness stems from inspiring others, helping those that are struggling to find their why, and help them find their inner gay man empowerment.
