We had the good fortune of connecting with Nic Noblique and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nic, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always loved creating art. I made ceramics in middle school and actually exhibited that work at the Miluakee Museaum of Art. My biggest passion growing. up was skate boarding and snowboarding. After various and numerous injuries I found myself revisiting that passion for art. I picked up a stick welder and made my first sculpture with steel scraps, then another, and another. When I had enough Peices I showed them at a local art market and sold everything. That is the origin story and I’ve not stopped since.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the biggest difference between my sculpture and other artists are my processes. I have not met another artist that builds their own equipment and fabrication machinery to produce work that results in really unique bends, rolls, breaks, knots, and forms. I have a unique way of looking at things and dreaming up compositions of shape and form. I think my work is easily recognizable and stands out among other steel sculpture you see out there. No one can recreate what I do it’s just not possible without my fab shop so I think that is the biggest aspect of setting myself apart from others.
I don’t know exactly how I got where I am today to be honest. A lot of hard work, yes. Struggles, and ups and downs, absolutely. Perseverance I suppose. When you want to be successful on a certain path, you have to be willing to take the ride and not bail out when things go south. I knew I could make it work and that it would take time, so I held on tight and ran with it.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that you don’t need to pay so much attention to what the art world at large makes you believe you need to be successful. Honestly, if you are passionate about it, you don’t need the galleries and press and critical reviews and the traditional model of a professional artist. You need a strong team, a strong work ethic, a vision of where you want to go, and loyal clientele that support you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Cant go wrong with a stop at 3 Links for some punk rock and of course drinks at the Double Wide is obligatory. Hungry? Grab that hot chicken at Brick and Bone! Don’t miss out on Kettle Art either, drop in to see who’s showing! Make some time to visit the Nasher and have a pint at the Old Monk! Southwest Art Gallery is on the itinerary as well, being the oldest art gallery in Dallas and hosting over 18,000 square feet of incredible art.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
