We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Cooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nia, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Being a Hip Hop Artist is a blessing, but being a woman of faith takes the cake. Ministering through Christian Hip Hop (CHH) allows me to use my gift to reach the nation. I am able to give life experience that no other person would want to talk about. My platform in the CHH community allows me the chance to introduce God to others that may never walk in church. I am a vessel here to bridge the gap.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a FEMALE Christian hip hop artist. I highlight female because no one can do it like this woman can. I create music through things I went through, and things God shows me. This allowed me to pave the way on my artistry journey. I can tell you that I professionally got where I am by being obedient to God, and keeping God first. I also made sure that my connections with people were genuine. This wasn’t easy, because people can say they are for you and really not be. I had to be able to identify who was for me and wanted to see me make it. That came with knowing who was only there to make sure that they were with me when I made it. There is a difference. In order to overcome challenges presented I had to keep a close connection with Jesus. I had to understand my purpose and who was taking the lead. I had to make sure that God was in the lead and I wasn’t. I can tell you that isn’t always easy. This taught me that I can not do this on my own, and everything that I do God has to be first considered. I want people to know that I am their voice. I am the one that had an issue with addiction. I am the one that was molested. I am the one that used to love men more than myself. I am the one that loved the hustle. I was the pain that you endured that you have not let go yet. I am an example of being redeemed.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would go to the Christian Lounge. This is a place where you are able to enjoy yourself, laugh and listen to good music. Also, the Five Bistro food is amazing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shout out to first Jesus, for being the way the truth and the light. I want to give a shoutout to my husband Jacara Cooks. He has been a great support in the vision that God has given me to carry out. He always has my back to make sure that I do not get off focus when I get discouraged. I want to give a shoutout to my Bishop, Bishop Shelia T. The guidance that she gives to both my husband and I is more than amazing. She is not only my Bishop, but I also call this woman mama. Her love for me through every process that I had to go through in my life, was as if God personally was letting me know he loved me. Through the love and kindness she displayed to me in the midst of trials made me understand the grace God gives to us daily.
