We had the good fortune of connecting with Nayeli Salazar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nayeli, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always wanted to do something that I would enjoy, but I could never seem to figure out what that was. Instead, I would just spend most of my days bored or watching tv. But one day I was up late at night. I came across a few videos of someone making earrings & it really caught my eye. I’ve always had a creative part in me. It runs in my family. But this was something that I jumped at & tried it out. I instantly fell in love with the idea of being able to be creative & to know you can also wear & style up your handmade creations.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started crafting earrings when I was struggling a lot with my anxiety & postpartum depression. I never had the motivation or strength to do anything. I was really at a rough point in my life. But creating & crafting polymer clay earrings was something that helped me out so much. I started to feel at ease & just the enjoyment of it all made me feel way better & happier. I knew then that this was something that I would love doing. I ended up turning it into Simply Nay Designs. I do have a full-time job, but one day I hope to be self-employed & focus 100% in my business. I just think about it & I am so happy that I made the decision to start my own small business. Don’t get me wrong, it can be hard at times. I’ve had a few “launches” & not a single earring has sold. I used to beat myself up about it but at the end of the day, I am happy with what I made & what I created.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friend to Downtown Dallas. We would walk in downtown & check out some museums, parks & go eat at Serious Pizza, where they have the biggest pizza. We would try out new places, even ones I haven’t been too. We would go shopping all day & get some coffee, because we can’t live with out it & then in the evening we would ride the scooters where it’s beautifully lit & enjoy the rest of the night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my family for being the best support system. They have always gone above & beyond to help me out with my small business. They have motivated me when I didn’t have the motivation to do anything. They gave me the courage to keep going & to never give up. I also, from the bottom of my heart, want to thank my partner for being my right hand & being by my side through it all. Up late nights, “promoting” my items, attending my pop-up events, & just pushing me to do better & be better. I also want to thank everyone else who has supported me, showed love & who’s recognized my work.
