We had the good fortune of connecting with Miranda (Marie) Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miranda (Marie), we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
How I think about risk is you only have one life, it is either now or never. I never wanted to live life not knowing the “what ifs” and living with that regret for not taking those risky leaps. Taking risks has played a huge role in my career. The thing about me is once I set my mind towards a goal I have to exhaust all options to get there. Every chance that I had I asked all the questions the moment I was struck with curiosity. Being a woman in these industries is very scary and can be lonely, but without taking risks and saying, “eff it!” I wouldn’t be where I am today. The biggest risk I took was dropping everything in Dallas, and moving to New York when I knew no one at the time. The city is huge, but I gained so much insight, and met so many talented people. The most common fear is the unknown, and with that I can say is you’ll never know until you try.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I consider myself a creative, I’m a jack of all traits. Every time I get the question “what do you do?” my favorite response is, “it depends on the day.” From managing a street team in the Dallas market for a promotions company, to posting content on socials for major festivals, to producing my own events, to working with artists at an indie record label, it is really hard to narrow down what it is I do. I’ve just had such a passion for the music industry since I was in high school. Any opportunity in the music industry that was presented to me I took it. Being a woman in this male dominated industry was such a struggle, but I always reminded myself to have fun with it and know my worth. When I started I had trouble with people taking me serious due to the fact I was so young and a woman. I think what really set me apart was my dedication and loyalty. I remember it was my senior year, and I was asked to help run a Texas tour. I literally skipped school to go on this tour.. Sorry mom and dad! I didn’t care what the consequences were I did what I had to do. Taking those risks is what got me where I am today. I worked in music entertainment for about 6-7 years in Dallas before I decided to move to NYC. I wanted to explore other fields in the music industry, and by moving out of Dallas I felt like I would gain that experience. I think that was my most proud moment. It was not easy, many of times I wanted to give up due to so much rejection throughout the whole process, or being looked over. My biggest advice is never take no for an answer, always find another angle to execute your goal because there is always a way. Exhaust all options!! You can accomplish anything you desire, you just have to get up and DO IT! No one is going to wait for you, and it’s up to you to decide how much do you want it or not. I know that sounds cliché, but many doors opened up for me when I put in all my effort to keep trying. Also, networking should be your best friend, you never know who you’ll meet. I think the most important part of that journey is your support system because I couldn’t have done all this without them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area— let’s say we started our day at noon. I would take her to Rudy’s chicken and order a 5 piece tenders with extra seasoning, extra Rudy’s sauce, and can’t forget the Big Reds. Usually we like to drive across the street and eat in the Fiesta parking lot, but Klyde Warren has been cute, so we could make our way there and enjoy the scenery. For the evening time I would take her to Paradiso for dinner and drinks, they never disappoint. I like attending my friends events for nights out. My favorite so far have been Paradise, Friends&Family, and Meet Me Underground. That’s how we would end our night.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve worked in such an amazing community these past years. For starters, I want to shout out Ashlen, Sanjay (CoffeeMusicHub), Alex, Yusuf, Topshelf, and all of Scoremore for giving me my very first introduction of opportunities in the music industry. A special shout out to Pha, Madisyn, and Edward for being the best mentors I could’ve asked for throughout my journey. Shoutout to Jacque, Yusef, Que, Cam Dooley for an amazing experience and support in the industry in New York. Last but not least I want to give a huge special thanks to my support system throughout my whole journey— Naeem, Lexi, Crystal, Jose, Bry, Camille. There’s honestly a huge list, but if anyone ever contributed in my journey THANK YOU and you know who you are. It’s been a blessing working within this community of people and I wouldn’t be where I am today without you.
