We had the good fortune of connecting with Miguel Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miguel, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I am always trying to lead by example so that my children can see that life doesn’t have to look a certain way. You can do work that you’re passionate about, make a schedule that allows lots of time for self-care, family, and adventure, and help a lot of people along the way.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always tried to do work that I am passionate about, in ways that help other people. It started with my travels around the world playing bass in a punk rock band. I realized that I could bring my meditation and yoga practice with me, and share it with others. From there I owned a few yoga studios with my wife, where our main focus was to teach traditional practices in a way that was accessible to our community. I wrote a couple of books combining punk rock, mindfulness, and meditation to try and help other people like myself. Eventually, I landed at the Dallas Meditation Center as the Center Director. I love this job because it’s a group of people with a common mission: to spread mindfulness and compassion through the practice of meditation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would eat tacos at Tacolicious, get tattooed at Elm St Tattoo and watch a punk show at Three Links. Then we would practice yoga at the Dallas Ashtanga Yoga Shala, and head to the Dallas Meditation Center to sit. If they brought their kids we would take all of them to a Rangers game. I love that DFW has so many fun things to do!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Émilie deserves the biggest shoutout of all. Her love and support have nurtured my creative work and allowed me to continue learning, growing and succeeding.
