We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Kervin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After I graduated from the University of Texas in 1999 I started working as a tour manager for a band in the jam scene down in Austin called LARRY & spent most of my twenties on the road with them. Wow were those some amazing years! Later I decided to continue and support the jam scene which means so much to me by starting Time2fly Music… a name which was pulled from a Widespread Panic song. I have such a passion to help book/promote bands, festivals, and venues that are dear to my heart. I’ve been fortunate to have my own business but to use it to help others as much as possible has been my biggest drive. We all want to make money to support life but its also been such a blessing for me to be able to have so many years around such beautiful people. In the end my thought process was how can I support live music and do what I love to do for those I love.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Not sure what sets me a part from anybody else but I do know how much it means to me to be part of a team. I try to be the biggest team player possible when working with others, and go above & beyond the call of duty. Proud that I can be someone trusted and relied on. The industry has its up and downs like any other….definitely not an easy rollercoaster to be on but wow what a long strange trip its been. I love it all… the good times and the bad. There have so many special moments over the years with live music and the jamily community. The lesson I’ve learned is that I am blessed to have the opportunity to work in this field where I can and truly grateful to everyone who has given me a chance to work with them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well 1st of we would get out around DFW and see some live music! I would take my friend to see shows at Granada Theater, Deep Ellum Art Co, Sundown at Granada, Three Links, Club Dada, Freeman Cafe, Trees, Bomb Factory, Green Elephant, the Barley House, Windmills Brewery and anywhere else having jams we would dig. We would get out to see some touring shows but also target some amazing local talent we have here and support those artists too. I would definitely take my buddy to see my people at my favorite Italian spot Penne Pomodoro and El Fenix Mexican restaurants. We would also make time for dinner one evening at Sundown at Granada and then stick around for some live music after.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be here doing any of this today without the support of my parents. They were always there for me so I could focus on the work I am passionate about….even if the money wasn’t that good haha. I wish my Dad was still here so he could see how things have developed, and that I found my family from my love for the work. There are so many others that have had their impact on my path in life and the music business I have chosen to engage in. Without the influence of bands in the jam scene like Widespread Panic, Phish, Grateful Dead, LARRY and more I don’t think I would of ever decided to get involved in the industry. Also like to give a shoutout to Mark Collins(Mercury Room back in the day down in Austin), my Time2fly Music crew Christina Tran, Leland Kracher, Ryan Williams, Andrew Sherman & Dayton Steinmetz, Mike Schoder & Julia Garton (owners of Granada Theater/Sundown at Granada), John & Kari Larue (owners of Deep Ellum Art Co), Josh & Amanda Smith(owner of Banjos to Beats), my team at Dallas Reggae Festival(Mike Frakaz & Elijah Mitchell), plus Evan & Dustin Bozarth, Grego (Purple Bee Studios) who ALL mean so much to me in this field. Lastly I want to give appreciation to my beautiful wife Cynthia & son Austin who drive me to do better everyday.
