We had the good fortune of connecting with Melva Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melva, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The biggest factor I would say is Customer Service. Making people feel welcome, feeling like they’re more than just a service or dollar sign, understanding their need, and delivering a service and/or product. I’ve won the small business Customer Service award in my industry and city at least 5 times.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been a hairstylist for 30 years, Certified Hair Loss Practitioner 8, product developer, educator, and published author. In the beauty industry I’ve mastered my craft. The thing that sets me apart is that I’m able to give my clients a great style and healthy hair. Technic is integrated into the philosophy of mind, body, and spirit. Anything that affects the bloodstream will also affect the hair. I’m helping women to connect the dots between their medical issues and their hair stress. Focusing on diet, exercise, medication, hydration, vitamin deficiencies, hormones, stress, metabolism and testosterone all affect the hair.

The thing that excites me is a client whose hair has been restored goes from crying from the loss of an extension of themselves in my chair to tears of joy. Some of the ladies friends and family haven’t seen their real hair in years. By tracking down which issues may be causing the Hair-loss and giving the clients a full consultation gives a plan for restoration If any.

My mom started losing her hair when I was five years old. She had her hair in baggies praying it would one day grow back. She had bra length hair so the loss for her was devastating, I watched her become sad for a while. I promised I would find and answer and help women. This became a mission for me. I began to do research, read doctors journals, ask client’s detailed questions. How was their water intake, are you on hormone replacement therapy, what medications are being taken, any vitamin deficiencies. I crossed referenced what affect all these things had on the hair and came across a wealth of information.

So how I got here professionally was a good solid foundation, God, hard-work, supportive spouse and family. Was it easy! Absolutely not, Building anything is work, especially trying to get people to understand all I need them to do is trust me. They must believe for themselves. It is a spiritual journey, an awaking to be in tune with your body, mind, and spirit to regrow your hair.. Everything starts from the inside out. If something is going on internally before long you will see it externally. It will even show up in your hair. This is the reason they take a string of your hair during drug testing.

My clients come from all walks of life, nationalities, and cultures but I want the same thing for them all. A great style with healthier hair, and feeling of rejuvenation to go along with it. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is that you don’t have to great at anything or good at a lot of things just be good at something. When you know what it is that’s your focus. You learn everything you can about it! Then you find out who needs it, where are they, how can they find what you have. The next biggest lesson is knowing what you have. What’s your story? The two must connect in order for your audience to embrace you fully.

My mother taught my brother and I to always have each other’s back. I didn’t like the way she did it but it worked. My brother and I want the same thing for my entire family. My grandparents raised my brother and I from elementary until high school. They had five businesses and we learned business while other kids play with Barbie. I had learned to do payroll by the age of 10 years old. My brother owns at least three businesses today. We’re blessed!

The way I over came my challenges was with more challenges it seems. My grandchildren mean the world to me, anyone who knows me knows that. I have 8, a step grandson, and a good son whom I love dearly as well. Each one of them are my favorites, I tell them that and they all believe it. Different relationship but I want the same outcome with them all. To be productive men and women in society, who God has called them to be in whomever’s life, and be happy with who they see when they look on the mirror.

I want the world to know is that sometimes success won’t always look like you expect. I’ve been blessed to educate of some of the top beauty shows; Bronner Bro’s, Texas Hair Show, and The Image Expo, etc. It was a great experience but I soon learned it was not the life for me. I was happy educating the women one on one. We paint a picture of what we’ want to see but we can’t factor in all the unknown or unforeseen things in life, but there’s still someone you can help and something you have to contribute to your little corner of the world. The clients are receiving hair and confidence restoration. I’ am my sisters keeper.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I still like to hang out Downtown Dallas West End district. It is not as rowdy as the East Side where you have your party scene. Just any little café out spot around there that’s open, I get excited if I see a live band. I’m all girl I want to hang around the malls and spas.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We can rise to success alone there are so many that deserve credit. My husband Ryan Williams, children and grandkids for supporting me. Brother L.H. Reeves for always being there. Grandparents that raised me and taught everything I know about business. Texas Hair Show For taking a chance on me. Along with all the others that gave me an opportunity to teach. The magazines and shows that shined a spot light on my business. All my clients and customers that support the business, products and the book. All my family for believing in me. Any mentor that has poured in to me.
