We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa MCGowan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In 2020, life took an unexpected turn for me. My 16-month-old son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, an overwhelming revelation that shook my world. The constant monitoring and care needed for a child with this condition quickly became apparent and my previous job, with its rigid hours and demands, no longer seemed feasible. The well-being of my son was paramount, and I needed to find a balance between supporting him emotionally and medically while also ensuring our financial stability. Photography had always been my solace, a way to capture the transient beauty of moments. Holding a camera, framing a shot, and immortalizing a memory provided both creative fulfillment and a sense of control, which I desperately needed during those turbulent times. I realized that my passion could also be my lifeline. I decided to transition from a hobbyist to a professional photographer, establishing my own photography business. Not only did this move offer me the flexibility to be present for my son, but it also gave me the chance to turn my passion into my profession. It wasn’t easy, of course. There were countless late nights, lessons in entrepreneurship, and mastering the art of juggling a budding business while caring for a toddler with a chronic disease. Every photograph I took, and every satisfied client served as a testament to my determination. Today, my business stands as a testament to resilience, love, and the power of following one’s heart. Every frame I capture is not just a moment in someone else’s life but a reminder of the journey that led me here.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a dedicated family and child photographer who specializes in capturing the genuine essence of my clients through storytelling and representation. I firmly believe that the photos I create should evoke joy and happiness, resonating deeply with those who view them. One of my proudest achievements is my commitment to personal growth and recognizing my own value as a photographer. This self-awareness has allowed me to embrace my unique style and understand the significance of my work. What truly sets me apart from other photographers is my unwavering authenticity in capturing real moments and connecting with my clients on a personal level. I view each of my sessions as a collection of meaningful moments, and I possess the skill to freeze these fleeting instances in the blink of an eye. It’s a testament to my ability that I can capture the perfect image in less than 1/500th of a second.
I emphasize to my clients that perfection in a session is not the goal. Instead, I encourage them to let go of expectations and immerse themselves in the present moment during our sessions. It’s in this authenticity that the final product truly shines, and clients fall in love with the outcome. When I earn the full trust of my clients, they receive my complete artistic vision, and this is precisely what people invest in when they choose me as their photographer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Dallas, Texas, the experience of showing your best friend the best time during a week-long trip in the fall would be an exciting adventure. I would start the trip with the quintessential Texas experience by attending a Dallas Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium, soaking in the electric atmosphere of football season. For a taste of local culture and cuisine, a visit to the Bishop Arts District is a must. Explore its charming streets, and boutique shops, and dine at unique restaurants like Bolsa, which offer farm-to-table dishes. To savor breathtaking views of the city, make your way to Trinity Groves, where you can dine with a scenic backdrop. Throughout the week, explore the Dallas Arts District, visit the Dallas Museum of Art, and take a stroll through the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden to enjoy the fall foliage. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample Tex-Mex at Mia’s Tex-Mex or indulge in mouthwatering barbecue at Pecan Lodge. For a taste of nightlife, venture into the Deep Ellum neighborhood, known for its live music venues and vibrant nightlife scene. In summary, a week in Dallas would be a perfect blend of sports, culture, culinary delights, and scenic beauty, offering a memorable experience for your best friend.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to my husband, family, and friends for their unwavering support throughout my journey. Their loyalty and constant encouragement have been my rock, helping me navigate the challenges and obstacles along the way. Their belief in me has been paramount to my success, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without their love and support. In recognizing the importance of acknowledging those who contribute to my success, I wholeheartedly dedicate my shoutout to my incredible husband, family, and friends. They are the ones who deserve credit and recognition in my story, and I am deeply thankful for their presence in my life.
