We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Dieterich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing that outsiders probably don’t know is how much is involved in a posed newborn session. First I hand pick and design all of my set-ups based on the clients color and props choices. Then at the session posing the baby takes time. I like to have every detail perfect right down to fingers and toes placement. Some poses are harder than others and some babies do poses easier than others. It’s this time when the parents will usually mention how much patience I have and be amazed with everything involved to get that perfect shot.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is photography. I think my style and customer service sets me apart. I have many clients that have been coming to me for many years. I’m most excited about trying new ideas, especially photographing newborns outside this coming fall. I’ve gotten where I am today by working hard at every session. I’m constantly learning and improving my craft. I wouldn’t say it was easy, but I don’t feel like it’s been that hard either. Working with children and using a camera have both come naturally to me. I love my “job” and meeting mom’s to be, working with newborn babies, watching them grow and change each time I see them. Forming lasting relationships with clients and watching their families grow.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard question as I don’t go out a lot. But if I was, I would go somewhere to eat, probably BBQ. Then maybe hit up a few thrift shops, We might go to a park and have a picnic. If it’s summer we might go somewhere to swim.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am today without the support of my family, mainly my mom, husband and sisters. They all have listened to me talk about my business, helped me many times figure out what to do and just be there supporting me.
