We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Griffey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, what is the most important factor behind your success?
When you are starting a business I think it’s important to be focusing on something your passionate about. When you start a business, you are committing yourself to something for the foreseeable future, so you need to be getting yourself into something that you really enjoy doing every day. I’ve been creating videos since I was 10 years old and I have been taking film classes for 4 years. Videography is something I’m passionate about, and when your truly passionate about something, you put everything you have into making it successful.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I take great pride in providing quality to the clients that I work with. What I believe sets me apart from other videographer is my dedication to making sure my clients are happy with the product I provide to them, even if the finished video isn’t exactly what I had envisioned for the project. Being a freelance videographer definitely isn’t easy and you have to make sure that you leave a good and lasting impression with everyone you work with so that you build a reputation within the industry. That is how take the first step in standing out in this industry, even if you provide a great final product, if you don’t treat your clients well they won’t want to work with you. It’s through hard work every day, and being committed to what I love doing, that I can be successful in this career. A great example of this is my short documentary entitled “Animating Autism – The Dane Parsons Story”. Though it is only 7 minutes long, I took the time to make sure every single frame of the video was the very best I could do so that I could produce the best quality video I could. All that hard work has paid off as I have gotten accepted to film festivals across the country and has greatly helped in getting my name out into the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite part of Dallas, is the food, there are so many restaurants to eat at and there is so much diversity. The Dallas Zoo and Aquarium also come to mind as really nice spots to spend an afternoon in the town. Reunion tower is also a great place to check out some views of the city, and of course any visit to the city wouldn’t be complete without going to a high school football game, those are truly unique to Texas.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success so far definitely would not have been possible without the constant support of my film teacher, Jay Slivocka. Whether it is giving feedback to my projects, or advising me on how to manage the various aspects of my business, Jay has always been there and supported me every step of the way. He is an inspiration to keep going and always be learning new things to distinguish myself in this competitive industry.
