We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
I want to reach a point to where i’m able to travel the world playing shows while also helping other musicians grow and be seen. Think like excisions “Subsidia” label. Showcasing music to a mass audience to people who might not have those opportunities yet, I see myself going down that path when the time is right. But before that I would say my biggest goal as of current, would be to play EDC BassPod, that will be a moment I know I have to be doing something right.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart is the strong idea I have behind my brand. I have spent a lot of time behind the scenes formulating what I want my brand to look like and convey, the story behind it all. Im excited to roll out more and more about the story alongside the music that will be coming out over the fall and into 2023. To get to where I’m at today it took a lot of no’s and a lot of people ignoring me. There are no guidebook’s on how to build a music project from the ground up so its an uncertain path for everybody but what I can say is that if you try hard enough for long enough things will change but you’ll only start noticing that after the fact. If theres anything I can say with 100% certainty its that this is not easy but the love for the music and seeing how it can help others like it did for me is what keeps me going in tough times. One lesson I’ve learned along the way is you never know who you’re talking to in this industry so always assume whoever you’re talking to knows something you don’t. Thats the easiest way to keep yourself humble and in a learning mindset. One thing Im excited for is my merch that I’ve been working on for a while behind the scenes! Countless amounts of time trying to make sure I do it right!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First I would take them to Bic’s in carrolton for breakfast. Best breakfast diner in DFW hands down. Then maybe go around downtown Dallas exploring the amazing art scattered around the city. One place I would be sure not to miss is the Dallas aquarium, I’ve loved that place since I was a kid. Dinner would be the tried and true Uncle Julios or the original Twisted Root in Deep Ellum. We would have to hit either The Factory for a concert or go to the Green Elephant to see all the homies. The final place’s I would say that can’t be missed would be the Perot Museum or the Dallas Museum of Modern Art.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have been immensely fundamental people in the growth of the Malware project but to name a few I would say, PHYS!XX has helped me grow as a producer and songwriter. My Current manager Darrick is the one person I would not be able to do this without, he is not only one of my best friends but my most influential team member. Of course, I can’t forget my mom and dad, they have been supporting me in my goals and ambitions since I was a kid but I truly couldn’t have asked for a better support system.
