We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Durbin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I believe one of the most important habits that has helped me succeed in my business is setting a routine and sticking to it. Waking up early and following the same systems and processes daily is a staple in my life. When you first start a business and work for yourself, the reaction from friends and family is often, “How cool! You get to work from home, and do whatever you want all day!” But in reality, if you want to succeed in starting your own business, you have to treat it like the job that it is. Having the discipline to set your alarm, put your phone down, turn the TV off, and get to work is something that a lot of people have a hard time doing. In the beginning of the pandemic I watched friends and family struggle with working remote, because they lacked the discipline to ignore the distractions around their homes. This is exactly why it’s so important to create the habit, especially in a new business, of treating your business like any other job and put in the hours required for success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Everyone in the leather industry has their own style of work. It can be one of the most difficult parts of this craft, because with social media it’s so easy to look at someone else’s work and want to try and imitate it. When I first began, my work looked a lot like my mentors, but as my skills progressed I to developed my own style. Most importantly this came from practice and time at the bench. Growing up, I never wanted to have the same clothes, or shoes, or accessories as the other kids. As I started to dive into the western world I sought out things that were different. Naturally I stumbled into custom leather work, and was hooked. There’s something special about having a belt or wallet that is custom made completely for you. Durb’s Leather is about giving people an expression of themselves in product form that makes them feel good every time they use it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Georgetown, Texas where there isn’t anything crazy exciting to do, but that’s what I like about it. For me, it’s all about the time you get to spend with loved ones no matter where you are. That said, I would take them to some of my favorite local spots to eat and grab a couple beers. Next up, would be my family’s house on Lake Travis. That place is near and dear to my heart, and holds some of my favorite memories!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I owe thanks to, but my biggest supporters have always been my wife Maeghan, my parents, my brother, and the rest of my family. They have all been by my side through the highs and the lows of this business and I couldn’t have done it without them!
My mentor, Clayton Kinney (CDK Leather) taught me for years and I wouldn’t be in this craft without him. He took me in when I was a student at Texas A&M, and we are still good friends to this day. Now we get to bounce ideas off each other, and it’s a really special friendship.
I also owe all of my friends who have bought things, advertised, and spread the word about my business throughout the years. Several of my best buds have quite the collection of Durb’s Leather goods. They probably don’t realize it, but they have grown my business more than they will ever know.
